Chapter 7 - The Collapse of an Empire

Evelyn snatched the paper from Darius’s trembling hands, her eyes scanning the genetic markers, the official court stamps, and the unmistakable signature of the lab director.

"No... no, this is impossible!" Evelyn cried, tearing the paper in half with frantic, clawing fingers. "This is forged! Jasmine, tell me this is a lie!"

Jasmine didn't answer. She was sobbing uncontrollably, backing away toward the kitchen exit, but two off-duty Fulton County deputies hired by Ray were already blocking the doors.

Marcus walked up the steps of the stage, completely ignoring Darius, and stopped in front of Jasmine.

"Give me my son," Marcus said, his voice cold and flat. "You tried to sell my boy to a bunch of stuck-up phonies so you could live in Buckhead. We're done here."

"Marcus, please..." Jasmine wept, clutching the baby to her chest. "Don't do this here..."

"Give him to me," Marcus repeated, taking the baby firmly but gently into his arms. The child whimpered, and Marcus turned toward the exit. "See you in family court on Monday, Jasmine. And don't bother going back to that Sandy Springs condo. The locks are already being changed on court order."

As Marcus walked out of the Swan Coach House, the room dissolved into absolute chaos.

Reporters were live-streaming the event from their phones. Board members were shouting at each other. Mrs. Montgomery, the wife of Johnson Logistics’ largest commercial client, stood up, smoothed her dress, and looked at Evelyn with pure disdain.

"What an exquisite presentation of family honor, Evelyn," Mrs. Montgomery said loud enough for half the room to hear. "We will be reviewing our shipping contracts with your firm first thing tomorrow morning."

One by one, the elite guests began walking out, avoiding eye contact with the Johnsons as if they carried an infectious disease.

Darius turned toward Jasmine, his face flushed red with pure, unbridled fury. "You used me! You made me throw away my wife, my marriage, my entire life for a lie!"

"Darius, I loved you! I did it for us!" Jasmine cried, falling to her knees and grabbing the hem of his trousers. "We can still be together! We can adopt him! Please!"

"Get away from me!" Darius kicked his leg back, breaking her grip. "Get out of my sight before I kill you!"

"Darius! Control yourself!" Evelyn screamed, grabbing her son's arm. Her face was gray, her breathing shallow and ragged. "The board... we have to manage the press... we have to call the PR team..."

Suddenly, Evelyn gasped, clutching her left arm and chest. Her eyes rolled back, and she collapsed heavily onto the flower-strewn stage.

"Mom!" Darius yelled, dropping beside her. "Somebody call 911! Call an ambulance!"

Amidst the screaming, the flashing phone cameras, and the wreckage of the fifty-thousand-dollar party, Ray Caldwell took a single photograph of the scene, sent it to my phone with the caption: “Delivery complete,” and quietly walked out into the cool Atlanta evening.
