Chapter 12 - The Reckoning of Jasmine Carter

While Darius was dealing with the crushing reality of his choices, Jasmine Carter was facing her own day of reckoning in Fulton County Superior Court.

Dressed in a faded orange inmate jumpsuit, her wrists handcuffed to a belly chain, Jasmine sat at the defense table next to a public defender. The glamour, the expensive designer dresses, and the smug entitlement she had wielded so ruthlessly were completely gone.

Judge Thomas Abernathy adjusted his glasses and looked down from the bench with stern, unyielding authority.

"Ms. Carter," Judge Abernathy read from the bench, "you have entered a guilty plea to two counts of second-degree grand larceny, one count of wire fraud, and one count of filing a fraudulent birth affidavit with the state of Georgia."

Jasmine kept her head bowed, sniffling quietly. "I made a mistake, Your Honor. I was desperate... I was trying to provide for my baby."

"You were attempting to execute a calculated scheme of extortion and fraud against two separate families," the judge countered coldly. "You attempted to defraud the Johnson family trust out of five hundred thousand dollars, while simultaneously depriving your child's biological father of his legal parental rights."

The prosecutor stood up to deliver the state’s recommendation. "Your Honor, the state requests a sentence of four years in state custody, followed by three years of supervised probation, along with full restitution of the sixty-two thousand dollars Ms. Carter illegally drew from the escrow funds."

Marcus Drake sat in the back row of the gallery, holding eighteen-month-old Marcus Jr. on his knee. He didn't look angry; he looked satisfied. He had used the settlement funds recovered by Ray Caldwell to purchase a modest automotive repair shop in Cobb County, completely cutting ties with his past criminal associates to raise his son as a responsible, working father.

"On the charges of grand larceny and fraud," Judge Abernathy banged his gavel, "this court sentences you to three years at the Arrendale State Prison, with mandatory restitution upon release. Court is adjourned."

As the bailiffs led Jasmine away in chains, she looked back into the gallery, catching Marcus’s eye.

Marcus didn't wave. He simply adjusted his son’s coat, stood up, and carried the boy out into the bright sunlight, leaving Jasmine to face the cold iron bars of the life she had built on deception.
