Chapter 5 - Interrogating the Traitor Beneath the Estate

The sub-basement holding cells beneath the Moretti mansion were built out of reinforced concrete and soundproofed steel—a cold, damp bunker designed for men who forgot the meaning of loyalty.

Lorenzo was tied securely to a heavy iron chair beneath the harsh glare of a single hanging fluorescent bulb. His face was battered, his breathing ragged and shallow.

When the heavy steel vault door swung open, Lorenzo looked up, terror instantly flashing across his swollen eyes as Dominic and I stepped into the room.

I didn't carry a weapon in my hands. I rolled up the sleeves of my white dress shirt, revealing the intricate black tattoo of the Moretti family crest inked across my forearms.

I pulled up a metal folding chair, sat down two feet away from Lorenzo, and rested my forearms on my knees.

“Lorenzo,” I said softly, my tone conversational, which made him tremble even harder. “You worked for my father for eight years. You worked for me for ten. I gave you a million-dollar home in Alpine, paid for your daughter’s leukemia treatments, and gave you five percent of the Port Newark shipping manifests.”

“Dante… please…” Lorenzo rasped, blood spraying from his lips. “I was in debt… the sports books in Atlantic City…”

“I don't care about your gambling debts, Lorenzo,” I interrupted, leaning in close until our noses were six inches apart. “I want to talk about Victor Rossi.”

Lorenzo flinched, his eyes darting toward the corner of the cell.

“Three years ago, Victor Rossi tried to abduct my newborn son from St. Jude’s Hospital,” I whispered. “And ten minutes ago, you were on the verge of selling our security schedules to Rossi’s underboss. Tell me what Victor is planning for tonight.”

“I don't know anything about the hospital, Dante! I swear to God!” Lorenzo screamed, thrashing against his heavy zip-ties.

I nodded to Dominic.

Dominic stepped forward, placed a heavy combat boot on Lorenzo’s right knee, and applied fifty pounds of downward pressure.

CRUNCH.

Lorenzo let out an agonizing, ear-piercing scream that reverberated off the concrete walls.

“TALK!” Dominic roared.

“STOP! GOD, STOP! I’LL TALK!” Lorenzo wailed, weeping and hyperventilating. “Rossi knows! Victor found out two days ago that the nurse from St. Jude’s is living inside your estate under the name Elena Vance!”

My heart iced over. “What did you say?”

“Victor’s private investigators tracked Elena’s bank records through a prescription she filled for the baby last week!” Lorenzo sobbed, his voice cracking with sheer terror. “Victor hired a twenty-man mercenary assault team from Eastern Europe! They’re scheduled to hit this estate tonight at three in the morning! They’re going to breach the east gates, slaughter your security team, and take the boy!”

I slowly stood up from the metal chair.

The pieces of the puzzle fell into place with terrifying clarity.

Leo hadn't crawled into my office by accident tonight.

Elena had likely seen strange vehicles circling the perimeter road this evening and had become frantic, causing Leo to slip through her quarters while she was packing an emergency go-bag.

I looked down at the pathetic traitor on the floor.

“Thank you for your honesty, Lorenzo,” I said calmly.

“Dante… please… have mercy…” Lorenzo begged.

“I will show you the exact same mercy you showed my eight-month-old son when you sold his location to Victor Rossi,” I replied coldly.

I turned my back on the cell and walked toward the heavy steel door.

“Dominic,” I said without looking back.

“Boss?”

“Clean the floor. Then assemble the full tactical strike team in the armory. We have three hours to prepare a welcome party for Victor Rossi.”
