Chapter 4 - The 99.9% Match That Brought the Don to His Knees

The rhythmic, mechanical humming of the portable DNA sequencer sounded like a heartbeat inside the quiet office.

Dominic stood by the locked door, his arms crossed over his massive chest, his jaw set in a rigid line. Elena sat on the sofa, clutching Leo against her chest, gently rocking the sleeping infant as she hummed a soft, soothing lullaby.

Dr. Ronald Bell hovered over the digital display of the centrifuge analyzer, tapping rapid keystrokes on his encrypted laptop.

For forty-five agonizing minutes, the only sound in the room was the hum of the cooling fans and the faint ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner.

BEEP.

A sharp, high-pitched electronic tone broke the silence.

Ronald froze. He adjusted his glasses, leaned in close to the screen, and scrolled through twenty-four standard short tandem repeat (STR) genetic markers.

The geneticist’s hands began to shake. He looked up from the monitor, his face completely pale, his eyes wide with profound, scientific awe.

“Dante…” Ronald whispered, his voice trembling.

“Tell me, Ronald,” I commanded, my heart hammering violently against my ribs.

Ronald turned the laptop screen toward me.

In the center of the display was a high-resolution genetic compatibility chart. At the bottom of the report, printed in bold green alphanumeric characters, was the official forensic conclusion:

Paternal Probability Index: 99.9998%

Biological Relationship: Confirmed Father and Son (Direct Paternity).

The breath violently left my lungs.

I dropped to my knees on the Persian rug beside the sofa, burying my face against Leo’s soft cotton onesie.

He was alive.

My son was alive.

For three long, torturous years, I had believed that my bloodline had been reduced to ashes in a hospital incinerator. I had become a demon of the underworld, drowning my grief in blood, because I believed I had nothing left to lose.

And all the while, my boy had been sleeping three floors below my bedroom, breathing the same air, eating beneath my roof, protected by a brave young woman who had risked everything to save him.

I looked up at Elena.

Her eyes were filled with anxious, desperate tears, unsure of what the ruthless Mafia Boss would do next.

I reached out, taking both of her trembling hands into my calloused palms, and squeezed them with deep, profound reverence.

“Elena Vance,” I spoke, my voice thick with emotion, tears streaming freely down my face. “You saved my blood. You saved my soul. From this moment on, you and this child are under the absolute, permanent protection of the Moretti Family. Anyone who dares look at you with malice will be wiped off the face of the earth.”

Elena let out a choked sob of relief, nodding her head in tearful gratitude.

I stood up, wiping my face, and turned to Dominic.

The grief in my eyes instantly transformed into the cold, predatory steel of an apex predator preparing for war.

“Dominic,” I snarled, my voice vibrating with lethal authority.

“Yes, Boss?”

“Lock down the entire compound under Protocol Omega. Double the perimeter snipers. Place four armed tactical guards outside Elena’s quarters.”

I walked over to my desk, picked up my customized Kimber .45 caliber pistol, and racked the slide with a sharp, metallic CLACK.

“And now,” I said, stepping toward the basement corridor, “it’s time to pay a visit to Lorenzo.”
