Chapter 8 - The Shocking 7:00 AM Knock on the Door

Back at 4420 Windermere Crest, the morning sun broke through the tall pine trees at exactly 6:50 AM.

Inside the master bedroom, Eric rolled over in bed, groaning as the bright light hit his eyes. He reached out to feel Clara’s side of the bed, expecting her to be there or already awake making breakfast.

The sheets were stone cold. The bed was neatly made on her side.

“Clara?” Eric grumbled, sitting up and rubbing his face. “Clara, where are my golf pants? And make some coffee, the contractor is going to be here in an hour.”

There was no answer.

Eric swung his legs out of bed and walked into the hallway. The house was dead silent.

Downstairs, Diane was already awake, wearing her floral robe, standing in the kitchen trying to operate the espresso machine.

“Eric!” Diane called out angrily. “Your wife didn’t refill the water reservoir on this machine, and where did she put the imported coffee beans? I’ve looked through every cabinet. She is being deliberately difficult this morning!”

“I don’t know, Mom,” Eric muttered, walking down the stairs in his boxers. “She’s probably in the garage sulking because of the contractor.”

Just then, Madison walked out of the guest room, clutching her back and whining loudly. “Eric! My back hurts, and there’s no hot water in my shower! Did Clara turn off the master heater? Tell her to make me a cup of peppermint tea right now!”

“Alright, alright! Stop screaming, both of you!” Eric snapped, walking toward the kitchen. “Clara! Get out here!”

He reached the dining room and froze.

Sitting on the polished walnut table were the three sealed white envelopes, the silver house keys, the garage remotes, and Clara’s diamond wedding ring glinting under the chandelier.

“What the hell is this?” Eric murmured, walking over to the table.

Diane walked over, peering over his shoulder with a scowl. “What is she playing at now? Leaving dramatic letters? That girl is so addicted to drama. Open it and see what nonsense she wrote.”

Eric picked up the envelope with his name on it and tore it open.

He pulled out the document on top.

SUPERIOR COURT OF FULTON COUNTY – STATE OF GEORGIA

PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE AND SEPARATION OF ESTATES

PETITIONER: Clara Linwood Miller

RESPONDENT: Eric James Miller

Eric’s heart stopped. His eyes scanned the legal text. “Divorce? She filed for divorce? Is she insane? Over an office remodeling?”

“Let her file!” Diane scoffed loudly, waving her hands in disgust. “Let her file, Eric! You take half of this house, you take half of her retirement accounts, and you take full alimony! She thinks she can threaten you? We’ll take her for every penny she has!”

“Mom... shut up for a second,” Eric said, his voice suddenly trembling.

He pulled out the second document in the envelope.

It was the recorded deed from the Fulton County Clerk’s Office, stamped with yesterday’s date and time: 4:00 PM.

SPECIAL WARRANTY DEED

GRANTOR: Clara Linwood Miller (Sole Title Holder)

GRANTEE: Zurich Capital Residential Asset Fund LLC

CONSIDERATION: $760,000.00 (PAID IN FULL)

STATUS: RECORDED AND FINAL.

Eric’s breath hitched in his throat. The room began to spin. “No... no, this is a joke. This is impossible. She didn't sell the house. She can't sell my house!”

“What are you talking about, Eric?” Diane shrieked, snatching the deed from his shaking hands. “What does this say? What do you mean she sold it? This is your house!”

“It was never in his name, Diane,” Madison whispered, picking up the prenuptial agreement from the table and reading the bolded clauses. “Look at this... it says here Eric waived all rights to the property... it says the house was bought six years before they married with her private trust fund...”

“Shut up, Madison!” Eric yelled, grabbing his phone from his pocket with wild, panic-stricken fingers.

He dialed Clara’s number.

“The cellular number you are trying to reach has been disconnected or is no longer in service. Announcement 4-B.”

“What?!” Eric screamed. He redialed. Disconnected.

He dialed his bank app. He tried to log in to check the joint account.

ERROR: ACCESS DENIED. ACCOUNT CLOSED / ZERO BALANCE.

Just then, at precisely 7:00 AM, a thunderous, authoritative pounding echoed against the heavy front door.
