Chapter 7 - Boarding Pass to London: 1:14 AM Escape

The town car glided effortlessly onto Interstate 85 South, cutting through the warm Georgia night toward Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Inside the vehicle, the soft hum of the engine was the only sound. I rested my head against the leather headrest, watching the glittering lights of the Atlanta skyline blur past my window.

My phone buzzed on the console beside me. It was an automated notification from British Airways:

Flight BA0226 – Atlanta (ATL) to London Heathrow (LHR)

Departure: 06:15 AM

Seat: 1A (First Class)

Boarding Status: ON TIME

I arrived at the international terminal at 1:45 AM. The private first-class check-in lounge was virtually empty. A dedicated concierge in a crisp uniform greeted me with a polite bow, tagged my Rimowa suitcases with fluorescent priority tags, and handed me my boarding pass.

“Welcome, Ms. Linwood,” the agent said with a warm smile, using my maiden name which had already been restored on my passport. “Your flight will begin boarding at 5:30 AM at Gate F04. In the meantime, please enjoy the private luxury lounge on the mezzanine level. Champagne and hot dining are available.”

“Thank you so much,” I replied.

I took the private escalator up to the lounge. I found a secluded leather recliner overlooking the tarmac, ordered a glass of vintage Krug champagne, and opened my iPad.

I logged into the corporate portal of my firm.

A formal announcement had already been posted on the global executive directory:

GLOBAL LEADERSHIP UPDATE: The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Clara Linwood as Senior Vice President of European Regulatory Compliance, based out of our Canary Wharf Headquarters in London, effective October 18th.

Attached to the corporate bulletin was a welcome note from Sir Reginald Thorpe, the Chairman of the European Board:

“We are thrilled to welcome Ms. Linwood to our London executive team. Her unmatched acumen in asset protection, risk management, and regulatory governance will lead our international expansion for the next decade.”

I smiled, taking a sip of the cold champagne.

While Eric was fast asleep in a house that didn't belong to him, dreaming of knocking down walls and spending money he hadn't earned, I was stepping into a multimillion-dollar global executive career on a completely different continent.

At 5:15 AM, the lounge concierge announced the pre-boarding call for First Class passengers on Flight 226 to London Heathrow.

I gathered my designer tote bag, walked down the jet bridge, and stepped onto the Boeing 777. The flight attendant guided me to Suite 1A—a private enclosed cabin featuring a lie-flat bed, a personal television screen, and fresh white orchids.

“Welcome aboard, Ms. Linwood,” the flight purser said, offering me a warm towel. “Can I offer you another glass of champagne before takeoff?”

“Yes, please,” I smiled.

At 6:14 AM, the massive jet engines roared to life. The plane began to taxi toward the runway, gathering speed as the ground fell away below us.

Through the small oval window, I watched the sprawling suburban grid of Atlanta shrink into a distant miniature map of roads and trees. Down there, somewhere in that maze of concrete, 4420 Windermere Crest was about to experience the shock of a lifetime.

I pulled out my phone, switched it to Airplane Mode, leaned back against the plush pillows, and closed my eyes to sleep.
