Chapter 9 - Derek’s Downfall Begins: A House Built on Lies and Greed

In Columbus, Derek Vance was drowning.
Without Clara’s design brilliance and conceptual sketches, Vance Holdings had been utterly incapable of delivering on its promises to the Columbus City Council. The municipal development board had rejected Derek's revised plans for the downtown riverfront three times, citing a catastrophic lack of structural innovation, environmental compliance, and architectural coherence.
Worse still, the forensic corporate audit initiated by Julian Ross in federal court had yielded catastrophic results for Derek.
The auditors discovered that Derek had systematically siphoned over two million dollars from joint corporate accounts into offshore shell companies to hide assets during the impending divorce, while illegally using Clara’s pre-marital inheritance funds as collateral for commercial loans that were now defaulting.
On a rainy Tuesday morning, Derek sat in the plush leather chair of his downtown Columbus office, staring at a formal termination notice from the Columbus Commercial Development Authority. The city had officially revoked Vance Holdings’ primary development contract and awarded the revitalization project to an out-of-state consortium.
His private phone buzzed on the mahogany desk. It was Marcus, his longtime business partner and investor.
Derek snatched the phone. "Marcus, thank God. Did you talk to the lenders at Huntington Bank? We need that two-million-dollar bridge loan extended by forty-eight hours or—"
"It's over, Derek," Marcus interrupted, his voice cold and devoid of friendship. "Huntington pulled the credit line thirty minutes ago. The federal court issued a freeze on all your commercial collateral following the embezzlement findings."
"Marcus, listen to me!" Derek screamed, sweat beading on his forehead. "It's a temporary administrative dispute with my ex-wife! We can settle this—"
"I’m pulling my capital out, Derek," Marcus cut him off ruthlessly. "Every major investor in Ohio knows your firm was built on stolen designs and fabricated balance sheets. You're toxic. If you call my office again, my security team will escort you off the premises."
The line went dead.
Derek slammed the phone against the wall, shattering the screen into a hundred spiderweb fractures. He buried his face in his hands, his chest heaving with shallow, ragged breaths.
He had lost his investors. He had lost his city contracts. His bank accounts were frozen, and the luxurious Muirfield home was facing foreclosure within ninety days.
In his blind desperation, Derek opened his laptop and searched for the one person he believed was responsible for his ruin: Clara Montgomery.
When the search results loaded, Derek’s jaw dropped in absolute shock.
Dominating the national business headlines was a full-page feature from Forbes Real Estate: 'The Queen of Sustainable Architecture: How Clara Montgomery and Morgan Crest Enterprises Are Building the Future of American Cities.'
Accompanying the article was a high-resolution photograph of Clara. She looked stunning, powerful, and radiant, dressed in an emerald designer blazer, standing beside Liam Morgan at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for their thirty-million-dollar waterfront complex.

Beneath the photograph was an announcement that sent Derek’s blood running cold: Morgan Crest Enterprises to Host Annual National Developers Gala in Pittsburgh; Billion-Dollar Expansion Announced.
Derek’s eyes narrowed with a toxic mixture of envy, humiliation, and desperate cunning. "You took everything from me, Clara," he snarled at the glowing screen. "You think you can play with billionaires while I rot in the dirt? I’m coming to Pittsburgh."
