Chapter 14 - A Love Deserved: The Healing of Two Broken Souls

That evening, the celebration moved to the private gardens of our Victorian home in Highland Park.
Lanterns hung from the branches of the ancient oak trees, casting a warm, magical glow over the lawn where Emily ran through the grass, chasing fireflies with Rachel. The sweet aroma of blooming jasmine and grilled cedar-plank salmon filled the balmy summer air.
Liam and I stood on the wide wooden porch, leaning against the railing with glasses of crisp white wine, watching our daughter laugh under the twilight sky.
"Look at her," Liam whispered, wrapping his arm around my waist and pulling me gently against his chest. "She’s the happiest kid in the city."
"Because she knows she’s loved," I replied, resting my head against Liam's shoulder, feeling the deep, steady rhythm of his heartbeat. "For so long, Liam, I thought love was something you had to earn through obedience. I thought if I just worked harder, stayed quieter, and tolerated more insults, Derek would eventually see my worth."
Liam turned me gently in his arms, cupping my face in his warm, strong hands. His hazel eyes were filled with an intensity of devotion that made my breath catch.
"You never had to earn love, Clara," Liam said softly, his thumb tracing the contour of my cheekbone. "You are a masterpiece, both in your brilliant mind and your beautiful soul. Derek Vance was a blind man holding a diamond, complaining that it cut his fingers because he didn't know how to treasure something so rare."
Liam reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He dropped to one knee on the polished porch floor, the soft glow of the garden lanterns illuminating his face.
He opened the box, revealing an exquisite, custom-designed ring featuring a flawless emerald surrounded by a delicate constellation of brilliant diamonds.
"Clara Montgomery," Liam said, his voice steady and full of profound promise. "You built an empire with your own hands. You survived the storm and created a sanctuary of joy for our daughter. Will you do me the absolute honor of becoming my wife, my partner, and my forever?"
I covered my mouth with both hands, the tears streaming down my face in a river of pure, radiant happiness.
Through the tears, I looked down at the man who had honored every promise, respected every boundary, and loved me with his whole heart from the moment we met.

"Yes," I choked out, a joyous laugh breaking through my sobs. "Yes, Liam! A thousand times, yes!"
Liam slipped the emerald ring onto my finger—a ring that symbolized growth, rebirth, and unbreakable strength—and rose to pull me into a deep, passionate kiss as Rachel’s cheers echoed across the garden.
