Chapter 11 - The Truth Unravels: Exposing the Fraud of Derek Vance

The humiliation at the gala was merely the prelude to Derek Vance’s complete legal and financial destruction.
Forty-eight hours after the incident at the Omni William Penn, the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania convened for the final summary judgment hearing in the case of Montgomery v. Vance & Vance Holdings LLC.
The federal courtroom was stark and imposing. I sat at the plaintiff's table beside Julian Ross, dressed in a sharp charcoal business suit, with comprehensive binders of forensic evidence neatly organized before us.
Across the aisle, Derek sat slumped beside Greg Sterling. Derek looked broken; the swagger had been entirely stripped away, replaced by the hollow, sunken gaze of a man who knew the executioner was reading his sentence.
Judge Evelyn Harrison, a no-nonsense federal judge with thirty years on the bench, adjusted her half-rim glasses and looked down at the documents before her.
"Having reviewed the exhaustive forensic accounting records, the patent and architectural copyright registrations, and the corporate formation charters of Vance Holdings LLC," Judge Harrison began, her voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls, "this court finds overwhelmingly in favor of the plaintiff, Clara Montgomery."
Derek let out a low groan, dropping his head into his hands.
"The evidence demonstrates a clear, systematic, and intentional pattern of corporate fraud, intellectual property theft, and financial embezzlement orchestrated by Mr. Derek Vance," the judge continued relentlessly. "Mr. Vance fraudulently utilized Ms. Montgomery’s inherited capital to secure commercial underwriting, while falsely claiming sole authorship of her copyrighted architectural works."
Judge Harrison leveled a piercing gaze directly at Derek.
"Accordingly, this court orders the immediate dissolution of Vance Holdings LLC. All remaining corporate assets, bank accounts, and licensing royalties—totaling approximately $6.8 million—are hereby transferred in their entirety to Clara Montgomery as restitution for stolen property and unpaid design equity. Furthermore, the court orders Mr. Vance to surrender all titles to the residential property in Columbus to satisfy outstanding liabilities."
Julian Ross leaned over to me and whispered, "It’s a total wipeout, Clara. You own everything."
"Regarding the matter of child support and parental rights," Judge Harrison concluded, her tone turning ice-cold, "the court notes Mr. Vance’s complete absence from the child’s life, his history of domestic abandonment during active labor, and his documented violations of interstate protective orders. Full and sole legal and physical custody of the minor child, Emily, is awarded exclusively to Clara Montgomery. Mr. Vance’s parental rights are formally suspended pending psychiatric evaluation, with a permanent restraining order remaining in full effect."
Bang!
The gavel struck the sound block with the finality of a guillotine.
"Court is adjourned."
As Judge Harrison walked off the bench, Derek suddenly lunged across the aisle toward our table, tears of rage streaming down his red face.
"Clara! You can't do this to me!" he sobbed, his voice cracking into high-pitched hysteria. "I have nothing left! I don't have a penny! How am I supposed to live?!"
I turned slowly, looked down at the man who had once treated me like dirt beneath his designer shoes, and pulled a single twenty-dollar bill from my purse.
I laid the bill gently on the defense table in front of him.

"Taxi money, Derek," I said softly, looking him dead in the eye. "Keep the change."
I turned my back on his screams, took Julian’s arm, and walked out the heavy oak doors into the bright Pennsylvania sunshine, never to look back again.
