Chapter 10 - The Ghost at the Gala: A Reunion He Never Expected

The Grand Ballroom of the Omni William Penn Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh was bathed in the warm, golden glow of crystal chandeliers. Over four hundred titans of American real estate, finance, and urban development mingled in bespoke tuxedos and flowing evening gowns, celebrating the unprecedented success of Morgan Crest Enterprises.

I stood near the grand stage, holding a glass of vintage champagne, wearing a midnight-blue silk gown that flattered every curve of my confident, healed body. Beside me stood Liam, impeccably handsome in a classic black tuxedo, his hand resting possessively yet tenderly at the small of my back.

"Are you ready for your keynote speech, Partner?" Liam whispered near my ear, his breath warm against my neck.

"I’ve never been more ready in my life," I replied, looking around the room filled with people who respected my intellect and leadership.

Suddenly, a disturbance at the main entrance drew the attention of the security detail.

A man was arguing loudly with the private guards at the velvet ropes, waving an outdated corporate credential. He was disheveled, his tuxedo slightly rumpled, his hair unkempt, and his face flushed with the manic desperation of an uninvited ghost.

It was Derek Vance.

My heart gave a momentary jolt—not of fear, but of pure, unadulterated disbelief. Derek had actually possessed the audacity to crash the highest-profile corporate gala in the state.

Liam noticed my posture stiffen and followed my gaze. His eyes darkened instantly. "Is that him?"

"Yes," I said quietly, keeping my composure. "That’s Derek."

"I’ll have security throw him into the street," Liam said, his jaw tightening with protective fury.

"No," I said, placing a gentle hand on Liam's forearm. "Let him come in. Let him see every single inch of what I built without him."

Liam looked at me, saw the sovereign strength in my eyes, and nodded to the head of security. The guards stepped aside, allowing Derek to stumble through the double doors.

Derek pushed his way through the crowd of elite developers, his eyes scanning the room until they locked onto me. He froze, his gaze traveling over my designer gown, my radiant skin, the diamond pendant at my throat, and finally to Liam Morgan, whose arm remained wrapped protectively around my waist.

Derek approached our circle, attempting to summon his old, arrogant smirk, though his twitching eye and trembling hands betrayed his absolute ruin.

"Well, well, Clara," Derek said loudly, attempting to command the attention of the surrounding guests. "Look at you. Playing dress-up with the big boys. Did you really think you could run away with my child, steal my company's blueprints, and hide behind Pittsburgh money forever?"

The immediate circle of guests fell deathly silent. Several high-profile investors stared at Derek with unmasked disgust.

I took a slow, measured step forward, looking Derek directly in his bloodshot eyes. I didn't tremble. I didn't shrink.

"Derek," I said, my voice smooth, resonant, and carrying effortlessly through the quiet hall. "You seem confused. The only thing you ever gave me was fifteen dollars for a cab while I was in labor. And as the federal courts have already proven, the only thing you ever built was a house of cards on top of my stolen work."

Derek’s face flushed an ugly, furious crimson. "You ungrateful bitch! I made you! You were nothing before I gave you a home in Columbus!"

Before Derek could take another step, Liam Morgan stepped in front of me like an impenetrable wall of steel, towering over Derek with icy authority.

"Mr. Vance," Liam said, his voice dropping into a low, deadly register that made Derek involuntarily flinch. "You are trespassing on private property. You have violated a federal protective order by entering this room. And if you speak another word to my Chief Operating Officer and partner, you will leave this building in handcuffs."

Derek looked around the room, realizing with crushing clarity that no one in this room viewed him as an equal. To them, he was nothing more than a pathetic, deranged intruder.

Two burly security guards seized Derek by his elbows, twisting his arms behind his back, and dragged him kicking and screaming toward the service exit into the pouring rain outside.
