Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

With the divorce finalized in my favor, the criminal proceedings took center stage. Bradley’s family had fractured under the pressure. The illusion of their tight-knit, superior family dynamic completely dissolved the moment the money ran out.
Derek and Caleb, facing significant jail time for their roles in the assault, realized that Bradley was not going to save them. He couldn't even save himself. Their public defender advised them that their best option was to turn on my ex-husband. They took a plea deal: probation and community service in exchange for testifying against Bradley, stating that he had premeditated the humiliation and had heavily intoxicated them beforehand.
Barbara, desperate and unhinged, attempted to show up at my downtown office building. She bypassed the reception desk and tried to storm into my suite, screaming that I had stolen her son's future.
I didn't even stand up from my desk. I pressed a button on my phone, and within seconds, building security was dragging her backward toward the elevators.
"You're a monster, Sarah!" she wailed, her designer handbag—which I had paid for two Christmases ago—swinging wildly from her arm. "You're tearing a family apart!"
"You were never a family, Barbara," I said calmly, watching her struggle against the guards. "You were just a cult of narcissists sharing a last name. Enjoy the consequences."
Because of the viral nature of Tyler’s video—which had eventually leaked to the local press—the prosecutor decided to make an example out of Bradley. The judge was a no-nonsense woman who had zero tolerance for domestic abusers who treated violence as a spectator sport.
On the day of the sentencing, I sat in the front row of the courtroom. Bradley wore a cheap, ill-fitting suit. When the judge handed down her sentence, the entire courtroom was dead silent.
"Bradley Thomas," the judge said sternly, looking down from the bench. "Your actions were not a joke. They were a calculated, humiliating, and physically dangerous assault on a woman you vowed to protect. Your lack of remorse, coupled with your attempt to leverage your family to intimidate the victim, is appalling."

She sentenced him to eighteen months in the state penitentiary, followed by three years of supervised probation.
When the bailiff stepped forward with the handcuffs, Bradley didn't look at his mother, who was sobbing hysterically in the back row. He looked at me. But I didn't offer him a final moment of closure. I simply stood up, smoothed down my skirt, and walked out of the courtroom before the cuffs even clicked shut.
