Chapter 10 - The Empire of LightThe fallout from the Met Gala was a seismic event in American financial history.

Viktor Volkov’s syndicate collapsed under the weight of international sanctions and FBI raids. Marcus was denied bail and placed in a federal supermax facility, completely bankrupted, disgraced, and marked for death by the very cartels he had tried to steal from.

My consulting firm, completely insulated from the blast radius, absorbed the remaining viable European supply chains at fire-sale prices. We were no longer just a corporation. We were a global, untouchable monolith.

One year later.

The air in the Hamptons was crisp, carrying the sweet scent of sea salt and blooming hydrangeas. The sprawling, oceanfront estate David and I had built from the ground up was bathed in the warm, golden light of late afternoon.

I stood on the massive wrap-around deck, wearing a flowing white linen dress, the ocean breeze playing with my hair. Down on the immaculate lawn, our rescue golden retriever was happily chasing a tennis ball. The world was perfectly, undeniably quiet.

I heard the soft, familiar footsteps behind me.

David walked out onto the deck. The ruthless, brilliant architect who had helped me burn down a cartel was completely gone. In his place was just a man—my husband, my equal, the love of my life. He wrapped his strong arms around me from behind, burying his face in the crook of my neck, inhaling deeply.

"Emily just sent the final projections for the European market expansion," David murmured, his voice a comforting rumble against my skin. "We officially control the board, Sarah. There is no one left to fight."

"There will always be someone who thinks they can take what we have built, David," I said softly, leaning back into his solid embrace. I placed my hands over his, guiding them down to rest gently over the slight, undeniable curve of my stomach.

David’s breath hitched. Even after months of knowing our secret, the sheer magnitude of it still left the strongest man I knew completely in awe.

"A new life," David whispered, pressing a fierce, reverent kiss to my temple. "A child who will never know what it means to be afraid."

"A child who will inherit the ocean," I corrected softly, turning in his arms to look into his intense, dark eyes.

I thought about the journey that had brought me to this deck. I thought about the freezing lake, the betrayal, the hostile takeovers, and the monsters who had tried to drag me into the dark. They had all looked at me and seen a target. They had seen a woman they could break, control, or consume.

They were all rotting in concrete cells, completely broken by the very woman they underestimated.

I reached up, lacing my fingers through David’s hair. He was my partner, my equal, the sword in the night that protected my light.

"We built it, David," I whispered, tears of profound, unshakeable joy pricking my eyes. "We finally finished building the fortress."

"And it is unbreakable, my queen," David promised, leaning down to capture my lips in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed our history and ignited our limitless future.

I looked out at the vast horizon, the golden sun reflecting off the endless expanse of the Atlantic Ocean.

The terrified, accommodating wife who had drowned in the past was a ghost, buried under a mountain of steel, glass, and absolute resilience. The queen had not just taken her throne; she had forged an empire that no man, no ghost, and no monster could ever tear down.

I was victorious. I was free. And this beautiful, brilliant empire of light was going to last forever.

What kind of legacy or industry disruption would you like Sarah and David to tackle next as their empire expands?
