Chapter 8 - The Breach in the Hospital Oncology Wing

Desperation turns arrogant men into reckless predators.

On Saturday evening at 8:45 PM, Derek Miller realized that every legal and financial avenue of escape was collapsing around him. His passport had been flagged, his bank accounts were frozen, and his defense attorney had informed him that a federal grand jury was preparing an unsealed indictment on Monday morning.

Wearing a borrowed pair of surgical scrubs, a disposable paper mask, and a forged visitor badge he had stolen from a clinic downstairs, Derek managed to slip past the ground-floor security checkpoint at Inova Loudoun Hospital.

He took the service elevator directly to the fourth-floor oncology wing.

He believed that if he could get into my room alone, if he could intimidate me into signing a sworn recantation affidavit dropping the protective order, he could stall the grand jury long enough to flee across the southern border using twenty thousand dollars in cash he had hidden in a storage locker.

He reached Room 412.

He turned the brass handle and pushed the heavy wooden door open.

Inside the dimly lit room, a figure was sitting in the bedside armchair reading a medical chart under a small desk lamp.

It was not a defenseless, frightened patient.

It was Nurse Clara Jenkins.

Clara looked up from her clipboard. She didn't scream. She didn't panic.

She calmly reached out and pressed the red Code Blue / Emergency Security button mounted on the wall above the bed.

“You have five seconds to lie face-down on that floor, Mr. Miller,” Clara said, her voice echoing with ice-cold authority.

Derek ripped off his paper mask, his face twisted in manic rage. “Where is she?! Where did you hide her, you miserable old hag?!”

“Allison was transferred to a secure, undisclosed private recovery facility twelve hours ago, Derek,” Clara replied, standing up and holding her heavy metal diagnostic clipboard like a shield. “The only thing waiting for you in this room is the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Department.”

Heavy boots pounded down the hallway.

Four armed hospital security officers and two off-duty sheriff’s deputies flooded the room through the double doors, tackling Derek Miller to the floor before he could take another step.

BANG.

Derek was pinned against the linoleum, his face shoved against the tile—in the exact same position he had held my head over the kitchen trash can six days earlier.

“Derek Miller, you are under arrest for Felony Aggravated Stalking, Contempt of Court, and Violation of a Protective Order!” Deputy Vance shouted, clicking the heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists with brutal, satisfying finality.

As they dragged him out through the oncology pavilion in chains, dozens of nurses, doctors, and patients watched the fallen executive scream and thrash in total, irreversible defeat.
