Chapter 14 - The Heavy Iron Gavel and the Stripping of the Predator

On Thursday afternoon, following less than ninety minutes of jury deliberation, the courtroom reconvened for the reading of the verdict and sentencing.
Judge Patricia Holloway looked down from the bench with grave, unyielding authority.
“Mr. Derek Miller,” Judge Holloway began, her voice echoing off the high mahogany walls. “In my twenty-eight years on the federal bench, I have rarely witnessed a scheme marked by such profound moral depravity, calculating cruelty, and absolute predation. You took a woman facing the most vulnerable medical battle of her life and attempted to weaponize her illness to enrich yourself.”
Judge Holloway adjusted her glasses, looking directly at the trembling defendant.
“For the crimes of Aggravated Malicious Wounding, Federal Wire Fraud, and Felony Witness Tampering, this court sentences you as follows:
“To serve a term of TWENTY-FOUR YEARS in federal confinement at the United States Penitentiary, Big Sandy, without the possibility of federal parole;
“To pay full criminal restitution in the amount of TWO MILLION, THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS to the victims of your fraudulent charity;
“And to remain under a PERMANENT, LIFETIME RESTRICTIVE ORDER prohibiting any communication, direct or indirect, with Allison Mercer and Clara Jenkins.”
BANG.
The heavy wooden gavel struck the sound block.
A collective intake of breath swept through the courtroom, followed by the quiet weeping of relief from my sister and supporters.
Two armed federal marshals hoisted Derek Miller to his feet, turning him toward the holding cell door.
As he was led away, Derek turned his head to look at me one final time.
He saw no hatred in my eyes. He saw no fear.

He saw only the cold, beautiful, unshakeable peace of a woman who had walked through the valley of the shadow of death and emerged completely victorious.
The heavy steel door slammed shut behind him, locking the monster away forever.
