Chapter 5 - The Emergency Restraining Order Served at the Corner Office

At 9:30 AM on Wednesday, the glass-and-steel lobby of Vanguard Wealth Partners in Tysons Corner was buzzing with morning market trades.
Derek Miller—having posted a temporary $25,000 cash bond at 4:00 AM following his initial booking—walked through the revolving doors, wearing a freshly pressed custom suit, his hair meticulously styled, carrying his leather briefcase with unshakeable, arrogant confidence.
He believed his high-priced criminal defense lawyer would reduce the domestic charge to a misdemeanor domestic dispute by noon. He believed Allison would fold, just like she had folded a dozen times before.
He stepped out of the executive elevator onto the twenty-second floor, heading toward his corner office overlooking the Virginia hills.
Standing outside his office door were four uniformed Loudoun County Sheriff’s deputies, accompanied by two special agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes Division.
“Derek Miller?” Deputy Vance asked, stepping forward.
Derek frowned, forcing a charming corporate smile. “Yes? Gentlemen, if this is regarding the misunderstanding at my residence last night, my attorney is already handling the paperwork with the magistrate—”
“We are not here about last night’s magistrate hearing, Mr. Miller,” Special Agent David Brody said, pulling a gold FBI credential from his jacket. “We are serving an emergency federal asset freeze order issued by the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, along with a lifetime, no-contact Temporary Restraining Order.”
The entire executive floor went dead silent. Dozens of analysts, junior partners, and administrative assistants gathered around the glass partitions.
Agent Brody stepped forward, slapping a thick red-flagged legal document onto Derek’s chest.
“Under the terms of this federal injunction:
You are permanently barred from coming within one thousand feet of Allison Miller, her medical providers, or Inova Health System facilities.
Every bank account, investment portfolio, and crypto wallet associated with your name and Hope for Allison LLC has been seized by the federal government.
You are suspended from corporate financial management pending grand jury review.”
Derek’s face turned from confident arrogance to a sickening shade of gray. “You can’t freeze my corporate accounts! I have client transactions clearing at ten o'clock!”
The managing partner of the firm, Arthur Sterling, stepped out of the boardroom, his face hard with disgust.

“You don't have clients here anymore, Derek,” Arthur Sterling said coldly. “We received a copy of the federal wire fraud indictment thirty minutes ago. Security has already packed your personal effects in three cardboard boxes in the loading dock. Surrender your building keycard and leave the premises immediately.”
Derek stood in the middle of the executive floor he had spent ten years trying to conquer, stripped of his power, his money, and his reputation in the span of sixty seconds.
