Chapter 6 - The Secret Trust and the Attorney Who Waited Five Years

The next morning, the rain had cleared, leaving the Dallas skyline sparkling under a crisp blue sky.

I drove to the downtown financial district, parking outside the gleaming glass tower of Sterling, Cross & Blackwell.

Holding Lucy’s hand in mine, we rode the private elevator up to the 45th floor. The doors slid open to reveal a panoramic view of the city and a reception area lined with dark mahogany and white marble.

A tall, imposing man in a bespoke charcoal-grey three-piece suit was waiting in the lobby. He had sharp, intelligent slate-blue eyes, silver-streaked dark hair, and an aura of absolute, unwavering authority.

Gabriel Sterling.

The moment he saw us, the stern expression on his face softened into a warm, genuine smile. He knelt down on one knee so he was at eye level with Lucy.

“You must be Lucy,” Gabriel said gently. “Your great-grandfather Mateo told me so much about you. He said you have the bravest heart in Texas.”

Lucy shyly peeked out from behind my coat and held up her stuffed rabbit. “This is Barnaby. He’s brave too.”

“A pleasure to meet you both, Barnaby and Lucy,” Gabriel said with a chuckle. He stood up, extending a strong, warm hand toward me. “Valerie. It has been a long five years. Don Mateo told me the day would come when you would walk through those doors.”

We entered his expansive corner office. A spread of fresh fruit, warm pastries, and apple juice was already arranged on the coffee table for Lucy, along with a coloring book and crayons.

Gabriel sat across from me, placing a massive leather binder on the table.

“Alex’s attorney, Arthur Vance, called my office seven times before seven o’clock this morning,” Gabriel said, pouring two cups of black coffee. “He threatened emergency injunctions, lawsuits, and media smear campaigns.”

“What did you tell him?” I asked, taking a slow sip.

Gabriel smiled—a predator’s smile. “I sent him a courtesy copy of Don Mateo’s full video deposition and the biometric audit of Salgado Holdings. He hung up after thirty seconds. Valerie, Don Mateo didn't just leave Lucy the voting shares. He appointed me as co-trustee alongside you. That means starting at nine o'clock this morning, every single corporate account, credit line, and asset managed by Alex and Theresa Salgado has been frozen pending forensic review.”

I leaned back, feeling a wave of profound relief wash over me. “What about the boys, Gabriel? Alex will try to use them for sympathy.”

“The boys are biologically Marisol’s and Alex’s,” Gabriel replied solemnly. “Under Texas law and the explicit terms of the trust, non-marital offspring conceived during an active marriage without the spouse's knowledge are legally barred from claiming trust assets. Don Mateo specifically wrote that clause to ensure Alex could never use illegitimate heirs to strip Lucy of her legacy.”

Gabriel looked at me with deep respect. “You raised those boys for ten years, Valerie. You gave them a mother when their own family treated them like chess pieces. But now, it’s time to protect your daughter—and yourself.”

“What is our first move?” I asked.

“At two o’clock today, the emergency board of directors meeting convenes at Salgado Tower,” Gabriel said, checking his watch. “And we are going to show Alex Salgado what happens when the real owner walks into the room.”
