Chapter 9 - Security At The Door: Selina’s Public Humiliation In Front Of The Whole Office

Following the conclusion of the shareholders' summit, the immediate legal dismantling of the conspirators began with surgical precision.
At 11:30 AM, two uniformed deputies from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, accompanied by a court-appointed receiver and Thomas Croft’s junior partner, arrived at the luxury high-rise building at Avalon Back Bay.
Selina Moore was inside her fourteenth-floor apartment, frantically throwing designer dresses, luxury shoes, and cosmetic cases into two large Louis Vuitton suitcases. She was on speakerphone with an airline booking agent, trying to purchase a one-way ticket to Miami using a credit card that had already been declined four times.
The heavy knock on the door sounded like thunder.
“Miss Selina Moore? Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department. Open the door immediately.”
Selina dropped her suitcase, her hands shaking so violently she could barely turn the deadbolt. When she pulled the door open, she was met by two towering deputies and a female court receiver holding an extensive inventory clipboard.
“What is this?” Selina shrieked, backing away into the living room. “You can’t just barge into my home!”
“This is not your home, Miss Moore,” the receiver said calmly, stepping across the threshold. “This unit was leased under Vance Global Corporate Procurement Account #109. Pursuant to the emergency writ of attachment issued by the Superior Court this morning, this lease has been terminated, and all assets within this residence acquired through corporate funds are subject to immediate legal seizure.”
“Everything in here belongs to me!” Selina yelled, tears of rage streaming down her mascara-stained cheeks. “Flynn bought these for me! They were personal gifts!”
“Mr. Vance used embezzled corporate trust capital to purchase these items, Miss Moore,” the receiver replied without looking up from her checklist. “Under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 266, personal gifts purchased with stolen funds remain the stolen property of the victim entity.”
One of the deputies walked directly over to the dining table, where Selina’s velvet jewelry box sat open. He pulled out a pair of sterile latex gloves, lifted the $110,000 platinum diamond necklace from the velvet cushion, and carefully lowered it into a heavy, clear plastic evidence bag stamped with an official case number.
“Give that back!” Selina screamed, lunging forward with her manicured nails extended.
The second deputy instantly intercepted her, gripping her arms firmly and pressing her against the wall. “Calm down, ma'am! If you interfere with a court-ordered seizure, you will be placed under immediate arrest for obstruction of justice!”
“You can’t leave me with nothing!” she sobbed, breaking down into hysterical tears as the moving crew began tagging her designer furniture, her high-end television, and her luxury wardrobe with yellow repossession stickers. “Where am I supposed to go? I don't have anywhere to sleep!”
“You have fifteen minutes to gather your verified personal clothing—items purchased prior to your employment at Vance Global—and vacate the premises,” the receiver stated flatly. “Your corporate-leased Mercedes in the parking garage has already been immobilized by a wheel boot and is currently being loaded onto a flatbed tow truck.”
Twenty minutes later, the residents of the prestigious Back Bay luxury building watched in stunned fascination as Selina Moore was escorted out of the front lobby into the cold autumn air.
She was carrying a single, battered cardboard box containing her cheap college textbooks, a few worn pairs of jeans, and her personal toiletries. Her makeup was completely ruined, her designer lifestyle evaporated in less than an hour, and her bank accounts contained a total balance of fourteen dollars and sixty-two cents.
As she stood on the sidewalk, clutching her cardboard box while the rain began to fall once more, a black town car pulled up to the curb.
The tinted rear window rolled down halfway.
I looked out at her from the warmth of the leather interior.
Selina looked at me with eyes full of venom and despair. “Are you happy now, Mabel? You destroyed my entire life! You took everything I had!”
I looked at her with neither anger nor triumph, but with the cool, distant detachment one reserves for an insignificant insect on a windshield.
May you like
“I didn't take anything that belonged to you, Selina. I simply took back what you stole from my daughter.”
The window rolled up smoothly, and the town car pulled away into the Boston traffic, leaving Selina standing alone in the rain with the bitter taste of her own greed.
