Chapter 6 - The Forensic Paper Trail: Uncovering Two Million Dollars In Stolen Life Savings

Inside the boardroom, Flynn was pacing furiously behind the long glass conference table, shouting into a speakerphone.
“I don’t give a damn about the stock price dip! Buy back the shares through the secondary holding fund! We release the prepared PR statement at 1:00 PM sharp, claim it was a deepfake extortion attempt, and threaten legal action against any media outlet that republishes the video!”
He looked up as the double doors clicked shut.
When he saw me standing there flanked by Thomas Croft and two forensic accountants carrying leather briefcases, the phone slipped out of his hand, clattering against the glass table.
“Mabel?” Flynn stammered, his eyes wide. He looked at Thomas Croft, and his expression instantly curdled into sheer panic. “Thomas? What... what the hell is this? This is an internal Vance Global executive session. You have no standing to be in this boardroom!”
“Sit down, Flynn,” Thomas said calmly, pulling out a chair at the head of the table and gesturing for me to sit.
I took the seat at the absolute head of the boardroom table—the seat Flynn had occupied for four years.
“Get out of my chair!” Flynn bellowed, slamming his fist onto the table. “Mabel, you have completely lost your mind! You’ve brought outside lawyers into a private corporate crisis! I am the CEO of this company!”
“For the next twelve minutes, yes,” I replied, opening my leather portfolio and laying out three color-coded forensic financial charts across the glass.
The two accountants immediately opened their laptops, connecting them to the massive projection screen on the boardroom wall.
Instantly, the wall lit up with an intricate web of offshore banking transactions, corporate tax filings, shell company registrations, and luxury retail receipts.
“Let’s review your executive performance over the last twenty-four months, Flynn,” I said, clicking through the slides.
“Slide one: Vance Global Operating Account #4402. Between October of two years ago and last week, exactly $1,940,000 was transferred under the guise of ‘Enterprise Logistics Software Royalties’ to an entity named Apex Capital Offshore Ltd in Grand Cayman. Apex Capital has two listed beneficiaries: Flynn Vance and Selina Moore.”
Flynn’s breathing became shallow, his chest heaving. “That... that was an offshore tax mitigation strategy recommended by an independent consultant!”
“Slide two,” I continued, ignoring his frantic interruption. “Apex Capital’s debit routing records. On August 14th of this year, $110,000 was wired directly to DePrisco Jewelers on Washington Street in Boston to purchase a 5.2-carat platinum diamond necklace. On November 3rd of last year, $48,000 was wired to a luxury auto dealership in Norwood for a brand-new Mercedes-Benz CLA 250, registered to Miss Selina Moore.”
“Slide three,” Thomas Croft interjected with the precision of a guillotine. “Between January of last year and today, $76,800 in direct corporate funds was utilized to pay the residential lease on Apartment 14B at the Avalon Back Bay luxury high-rise. Again, leased under Miss Moore’s personal name.”
Flynn stumbled backward, his hand catching the edge of a rolling leather chair to keep from falling.
“You... you hacked my private accounts. That’s illegal! That evidence is inadmissible!”
“These aren't your private accounts, Flynn,” Thomas said coolly. “These are the corporate operating accounts of Vance Global, an entity funded and majority-owned by Aegis Sovereign Trust. Under federal corporate governance law and the Sterling Charter, the majority shareholder has the absolute right to audit all transactional ledgers at any time without prior notice.”
At that exact moment, the wall-mounted video conferencing screen chimed.
The virtual room was suddenly populated by sixteen video feeds: the independent board members of Vance Global, the regional directors from Chicago, Dallas, and London, and the lead institutional lenders from Bank of America.
Flynn whipped around, staring at the screen in horror. “Disconnect that! Disconnect the feed right now!”
He lunged toward the main control panel on the wall, but Marcus, the head of building security, stepped into the boardroom and placed a massive hand against Flynn’s chest, pushing him firmly back into a chair.
“Keep your hands off the equipment, Mr. Vance,” Marcus said in a low, unwavering voice.
I leaned forward, looking directly into the high-definition conference camera.
“Good afternoon, members of the board and executive partners,” I said clearly. “My name is Mabel Sterling Vance. As the sole trustee of Aegis Sovereign Trust and holder of fifty-one percent of voting preferred shares, I am officially convening an extraordinary emergency session of the Vance Global Board of Directors.”
On the screen, the lead independent director, Arthur Pendelton—a man who had served on the board since my father’s tenure—nodded solemnly.

“We recognize you, Madam Trustee. We have received your forensic audit filing, and we are ready to proceed.”
Flynn sank into his chair, his face completely devoid of color, sweating profusely through his three-thousand-dollar suit as thirty pairs of eyes watched his kingdom dissolve into ash.
