Chapter 2 - The Midnight Raid & The Secret Collateral

I watched the live security feed on my phone screen in stunned disbelief.
Daniel was pressed firmly against the polished hood of his silver BMW, his hands secured behind his back in gleaming steel handcuffs. Two uniformed officers were searching his pockets, while a tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark tactical vest labeled "FEDERAL AGENT" stood on the top step of the porch, holding a thick stack of papers under the warm glow of the exterior carriage lamps.
Inside the foyer, Lorraine was having a full-blown hysterical fit. She was thrashing against the restraint of a female officer, her voice carrying clearly through the porch microphone: “Unchain my son this instant! This is a multi-million-dollar private residence! We have high-ranking connections in the governor’s office!”
“Ma'am, sit down on the bench and remain quiet, or you will be charged with obstructing a federal officer,” the female officer replied coldly.
My fingers trembled slightly as I tapped the speaker button on the app, listening to the federal agent speak into his radio.
“Dispatch, we have the primary subject detained on scene. However, County Land Records indicate the property deed belongs exclusively to Elena Vance, not Daniel Vance. We need to establish contact with Mrs. Vance before breaching the secondary garage vault.”
Secondary garage vault?
A cold knot formed in my stomach. What on earth had Daniel brought into my home during the seventy-two hours since I walked out?
Before I could process the shock, my phone vibrated in my palm. The caller ID displayed an unknown number with a local area code. I took a deep breath, composed my shaking voice, and answered.
“Hello?”
“Mrs. Elena Vance?” A deep, professional voice inquired.
“Yes, this is Elena Vance.”
“Mrs. Vance, this is Special Agent Marcus Sterling with the Financial Crimes Task Force. I am currently standing outside your residence at 742 Oakridge Terrace. We are executing a federal search and seizure warrant regarding your husband, Daniel Vance.”
“Agent Sterling... I left that house three days ago,” I said honestly, my voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through my veins. “I am currently separated from Daniel and preparing to file emergency divorce proceedings. I had no idea what was happening tonight.”
There was a brief pause on the other end. “I see. Mrs. Vance, did you give your husband permission to register the Oakridge property as commercial collateral for a private bridge loan with Apex Capital Holdings?”
“Absolutely not,” I said firmly. “The deed to that house was inherited from my late aunt. Daniel’s name is nowhere on the title. If he signed anything using that house as collateral, it is an outright forgery.”
Agent Sterling exhaled heavily. “That aligns with our financial audit. Daniel Vance attempted to pledge your home to cover a three-million-dollar deficit in an unauthorized offshore investment scheme. Furthermore, the creditors alerted us when he attempted to move several crates of unregistered luxury assets out of the property tonight under the cover of darkness.”
I closed my eyes for a second, feeling the pieces click together. Daniel’s lavish lifestyle, his sudden claims of massive consulting profits, his desperate attempts to control every aspect of my life—it had all been a hollow house of cards built on fraud and deceit. When I walked away with my red folder containing the primary financial records, his fraudulent empire began collapsing beneath his feet.
“Mrs. Vance,” Agent Sterling continued, “we require your presence or your legal representative’s authorization to access the property safely and secure the premises. We do not want your legal assets commingled with the seizure.”
“My attorney, Victoria Ramos, will contact your office within thirty minutes,” I replied. “And Agent Sterling?”
“Yes, Mrs. Vance?”
“Whatever Daniel or his mother claim about owning that property—it’s a lie. Preserve the security feeds. Everything in that house belongs to me.”
“Understood, ma'am. We’ll secure the perimeter until your counsel arrives.”

When I hung up, my hands were no longer shaking. The paralyzing fear that had kept me trapped under Daniel’s thumb for six years was completely gone. In its place stood an iron resolve. Daniel had tried to ruin my life, steal my inheritance, and break my spirit.
Now, he was going to face the full weight of the law.
