Chapter 10 - Daniel's Public Meltdown

Two days later, the annual Regional Business Leadership Gala was held at the Grand Marquee Hotel downtown.

Before his empire imploded, Daniel had purchased an expensive VIP sponsor table at the gala to impress wealthy venture capitalists and secure an emergency $2 million bailout for his crumbling consulting firm.

Despite being stripped of his home and facing mounting legal threats, Daniel’s pathological narcissism convinced him that he could still smooth-talk his way out of disaster. He rented an ill-fitting tuxedo, borrowed money from an old college fraternity brother, and showed up at the gala with an arrogant smile, trying to act as if nothing had happened.

As I watched from the mezzanine balcony alongside Victoria and our corporate legal team, Daniel was mingling near the stage, desperately pitching a group of prominent angel investors.

“Gentlemen, the recent rumors in the press are nothing more than a temporary domestic misunderstanding,” Daniel was heard boasting, nursing a glass of cheap champagne. “Vance Strategic Solutions is expanding rapidly. We are preparing to launch a massive logistics initiative next quarter, and I am personally guaranteeing a 25% return on all seed capital.”

Just then, the hotel ballroom lights dimmed, and the gala’s master of ceremonies stepped up to the main podium microphone.

“Ladies and gentlemen, esteemed colleagues,” the announcer boomed. “Tonight, we have a special announcement regarding the majority ownership and future leadership of Vance Strategic Solutions.”

Daniel beamed, puffing out his chest, believing the organizers were about to introduce him to the crowd. He took two steps toward the stage staircase.

“Please welcome the true founder, majority shareholder, and newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the company—Mrs. Elena Vance!”

The spotlight shifted instantly from Daniel to the top of the grand staircase.

I stepped into the brilliant beam of light wearing an elegant, midnight-blue silk evening gown, Aunt Clara’s diamond necklace catching the chandeliers, and my head held high with undeniable grace and confidence.

The entire ballroom erupted into polite, enthusiastic applause.

Daniel froze mid-stride, his face draining of all color until he looked like a walking corpse. His jaw dropped, his champagne glass slipping from his fingers and shattering across the polished dance floor.

“Elena?!” Daniel gasped, his voice carrying over the music. “What... what is this?!”

I walked down the stairs with steady, deliberate steps, taking the microphone from the master of ceremonies.

“Thank you, everyone,” I said, my voice echoing with crisp authority through the state-of-the-art sound system. “As of 9:00 a.m. this morning, the Board of Directors has unanimously voted to remove Daniel Vance from all executive positions, board seats, and operational authority due to verified corporate malfeasance. Furthermore, the company is undergoing an immediate corporate restructuring and full rebranding as Vance-Clara Enterprises, dedicated to ethical logistics and community philanthropy.”

The room erupted into gasps and murmurs. The angel investors Daniel had been pitching immediately took three steps away from him, shaking their heads in disgust.

“You can’t do this to me!” Daniel suddenly screamed, charging toward the stage in a fit of uncontrollable rage. “I made you! You were nothing before I married you! Everything you have belongs to me!”

Before he could reach the bottom step, four hotel security guards and two plainclothes police officers grabbed Daniel by his arms and forced him down onto the carpeted floor.

“Daniel Vance, you are violating a permanent protective order,” the arresting officer announced loudly over the quieted room. “You are under arrest.”

As the officers hauled Daniel out through the double doors in front of five hundred of the city’s most influential business leaders, I stood under the spotlight, calm, poised, and utterly victorious.
