Chapter 11 - The Police Investigation Deepens

The morning after Daniel’s spectacular public arrest at the gala, the legal machinery moved with devastating speed and precision.

Detective Sarah Jenkins of the County Major Crimes Division called Victoria and me into the precinct headquarters for a formal evidentiary review.

The conference table was covered in thick manila folders, forensic digital printouts, and certified banking audits.

“Mrs. Vance,” Detective Jenkins said, laying out several sworn statements. “Thanks to the hard drive provided by Miss Montgomery and the banking records you preserved in your red folder, the District Attorney has officially upgraded the charges against Daniel Vance.”

Detective Jenkins listed the formal indictment counts:

Two counts of Felony Domestic Battery with Great Bodily Injury.

Three counts of Grand Larceny exceeding $500,000.

Four counts of Wire Fraud and Bank Identity Theft for forging Mrs. Vance’s signature on mortgage documents.

One count of Aggravated Perjury and Filing False Financial Statements.

One count of Violating a Judicial Protective Order.

“The evidence is airtight, Mrs. Vance,” Detective Jenkins stated. “Daniel’s bail has been formally revoked due to his flight risk and his violent outburst at the gala. He will remain in county custody until trial.”

“What about Lorraine Vance?” Victoria asked. “She actively participated in the attempted theft of estate property and attempted to file a false report against my client.”

Detective Jenkins opened a secondary folder with a grim smile. “Lorraine is facing felony accessory charges and conspiracy to commit grand theft. We executed a search warrant on the storage unit Daniel rented in her name yesterday afternoon. Inside, we recovered $80,000 worth of antique heirlooms, jewelry, and silver belonging to Elena’s late Aunt Clara that Lorraine had secretly pawned and stashed over the past two years.”

I sat back in my chair, feeling a deep sense of poetic justice wash over me.

Lorraine had spent six years treating me like an expendable servant in my own house, constantly telling me that Daniel was an untouchable king. Now, her own greed and complicity had dragged her straight into the crosshairs of the criminal justice system.

“When will Lorraine be formally arraigned?” I asked.

“Tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m.,” Detective Jenkins replied. “And trust me, Mrs. Vance—the judge will not be amused by her theatrics.”
