Chapter 25 - MY MOTHER DIES FIRST

My mother died at seventy-nine.
Cancer.
Quietly.
My daughter visited during hospice.
Her choice.
Grandmother and granddaughter never became close.
They became real.
That was enough.
Before my mother died, she gave my daughter the old pantry key.
Not as symbol of authority.
As apology.
My daughter looked at it.
Then said:
“I don’t want this.”
My mother laughed weakly.
“Good.”
The key was discarded.
