Chapter 24 - MY FATHER’S APOLOGY

He apologized when my daughter was fourteen.
No therapist.
No family dinner.
He asked to speak to her in the garden.
She agreed.
I stayed far enough away not to hear unless called.
Later she told me.
He said:
“I thought fear was a tool.”
Then:
“I thought if I frightened you briefly, you would become easier to guide.”
Then:
“I was wrong.”
Finally:
“I used you to fight your father because I was afraid he did not need me anymore.”
There.
Chapter Ten’s truth from his own mouth.
My daughter asked:
“Do you think he needs you now?”
My father answered:
“No.”
Then smiled.
May you like
“But he loves me anyway.”
That was the lesson he had needed fifteen years to learn.
