Chapter 18 - MY FATHER DOESN’T APOLOGIZE

My father resisted longer.
He stopped defending the pantry.
That was not the same as apologizing.
He said:
“I regret the result.”
Nathan told him:
“That means you regret getting caught by consequences.”
My father nearly threw him out.
Nathan had survived worse men.
Then my father said:
“I still believe children need elders.”
I agreed.
That confused him.
“They do.”
“Then—”
“They need elders who understand they are elders, not owners.”
Silence.
He never liked that distinction.
Eventually he wrote no apology letter.
Instead he sent my daughter a birthday card.
No money.
No demand.
Just:
I hope you are happy.
May you like
She kept it.
That was the first inch.
