Chapter 6 - The Safehouse on the Cliff and the Encrypted Files

Within forty-five minutes of placing the call, my phone buzzed with an encrypted text message containing an address and an eight-digit gate code.
The destination was a secluded coastal estate located thirty miles north of the city, perched high on the rocky cliffs overlooking the churning Atlantic Ocean. It was not Julian’s primary penthouse, but a fortified private retreat known only to his most trusted inner circle.
When I arrived at the heavy wrought-iron security gates, the surveillance cameras scanned my license plate, and the massive barriers swung open silently.
The estate was breathtaking yet austere—a modernist fortress of reinforced glass, grey slate, and towering cedar beams, surrounded by a dense forest of pine trees that shielded it from prying eyes.
Two private security guards in plain clothes, unarmed in appearance but carrying the unmistakable posture of former Tier-1 military operatives, guided my car into an underground garage.
"Mrs. Hayes?" a woman in her late forties with sharp, intelligent grey eyes stepped forward. "I am Dr. Evelyn Reed, Mr. Vance’s personal physician and Chief of Medical Staff. Julian is resting in the private medical suite upstairs. Please, come with me. We have prepared a nursery suite for your daughter."
"I am not letting Hope out of my sight," I said immediately, tightening my grip on the baby carrier and my leather handbag.
Dr. Reed offered a gentle, understanding smile. "Of course. You may keep her with you at all times. Follow me."
We took a private elevator to the top floor, emerging into a sunlit living room with panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the crashing waves below. A massive stone fireplace crackled with burning birch logs, casting a warm, comforting glow across the room.
Julian was sitting in a high-backed leather armchair near the fire, dressed in a comfortable cashmere sweater. A portable telemetry monitor rested beside him, quietly tracking the steady, rhythmic beat of Liam’s heart.
When he saw me enter with Hope, he immediately set down his cup of tea and attempted to stand.
"Please, don't get up," I said quickly, crossing the room. "You need to conserve your strength."
"Thank you for coming, Clara," Julian said, his voice stronger now that he was in a temperature-controlled environment. "Evelyn told me what you said on the private line. What did you mean when you said Marcus was trying to murder me?"
I set the baby carrier safely on the sofa next to the fire, ensuring Hope was warm and comfortable. Then, I unzipped my handbag and pulled out the USB flash drive and the notarized documents from Safe Deposit Box 414.
"Before Liam died, your brother Marcus approached him," I began, my voice steady despite the tremor in my chest. "Marcus offered five million dollars to buy Liam’s heart directly for you. But Marcus didn't do it out of brotherly love, Julian. Liam’s private recordings and Dr. Barrett’s medical logs prove that Marcus bribed hospital staff to manipulate donor lists and accelerate Liam's passing."
Julian’s face drained of all color. "That’s... that’s impossible. Marcus sat by my bedside every day. He cried when the doctors said my heart was failing..."
"Marcus needed you alive for one specific reason," I continued relentlessly, placing the USB drive into Dr. Reed’s outstretched hand. "Plug this in. Listen to Liam’s recordings. Look at the corporate proxy agreements Marcus slipped into your medical authorization files while you were under heavy sedation."
Dr. Reed plugged the flash drive into a secure laptop resting on the coffee table.
For the next twenty minutes, the room was filled with the undeniable, damning evidence of Marcus Vance’s betrayal:
Audio recordings of Marcus Vance discussing the payout to Dr. Barrett to ensure Liam's heart remained viable while hastening his DNR status.
Digital copies of forged Board of Directors resolutions transferring Julian’s voting proxy to Marcus in the event of Julian’s "prolonged medical incapacity."
A secret medical report commissioned by Marcus analyzing the long-term toxicity of Julian’s immunosuppressant medication, revealing a planned deliberate overdose disguised as "organ rejection."
As the final audio clip ended, Julian sat frozen in his chair. His hands gripped the armrests so tightly that his knuckles turned white.
Beside him, the telemetry monitor began beeping rapidly as Liam’s heart rate surged under the massive spike of adrenaline and emotional shock.
"Julian! Breathe!" Dr. Reed commanded, immediately checking his pulse and adjusting his oxygen cannula. "You cannot let your blood pressure spike! Control your breathing!"
Julian closed his eyes, his chest heaving up and down. I watched the rise and fall of that chest—knowing that beneath his ribs beat the exact same heart that had loved me for seven years, the heart that had made promises on our wedding day, the heart that had ceased beating in a public hospital room just four days ago.
Without thinking, I stepped forward and placed my hand gently over Julian’s chest, right over the surgical incision hidden beneath his sweater.
"Julian... listen to me," I whispered, looking directly into his pained eyes. "Liam gave you this heart so that life could continue. Do not let Marcus destroy what Liam sacrificed everything to save. Breathe for him. Breathe for Hope."
At the touch of my hand, an extraordinary stillness fell over the room.
Julian’s breathing instantly slowed. The erratic, rapid beeping of the telemetry monitor stabilized into a calm, steady rhythm: thump-thump... thump-thump... thump-thump.
Dr. Reed stared at the monitor in utter disbelief. "His heart rate dropped twenty beats in four seconds... that is medically inexplicable."

Julian opened his eyes, looking down at my hand resting on his chest, then up into my eyes. A look of absolute clarity and fierce determination replaced his shock.
"My brother thought he could play God," Julian said, his voice ringing with absolute steel. "He thought he could buy a man’s life, murder his own flesh and blood, and steal an empire. He is about to find out what happens when you awaken a dead man's fury."
