Chapter 14 - The Proposal Under the Willow Tree

Two years later, spring arrived at the sanctuary in an explosion of vibrant color and life.

Hope was now four years old—a bright, energetic, curly-haired girl with Liam’s adventurous spirit and a laugh that could brighten the darkest room. She spent her days running through the lavender meadows, following Julian around like a little shadow, wearing miniature garden gloves and helping him plant sunflower seeds.

On a glorious Saturday morning in May, Julian asked me to meet him at the great willow tree at the edge of the sanctuary lake.

When I walked down the stone path, I found the lake shore decorated with hundreds of blooming white lilies floating across the calm water. Hanging from the weeping branches of the willow tree were dozens of tiny glass lanterns glowing with warm candlelight.

In the center of the clearing stood Julian, dressed in an elegant slate-grey suit, holding Hope’s hand. Hope was giggling, holding a small velvet box behind her back with obvious excitement.

"Mommy! Come look!" Hope shouted, jumping up and down on the grass.

I walked into the clearing, my heart fluttering with sweet anticipation. "What is all this, Julian?"

Julian smiled warmly, taking a deep breath as I reached them. He knelt down beside Hope and gently took the small velvet box from her hands.

Then, Julian looked up at me, his hazel eyes shining with absolute love and commitment.

"Clara," Julian began, his voice rich with emotion. "Four years ago, I was a dying man with an empty empire, unaware of what true love and sacrifice meant. Then, God brought an angel into my life—a woman who survived the deepest grief with grace, who fought monsters to protect her child, and who taught me how to live."

Julian opened the velvet box, revealing a breathtaking ring crafted from platinum and set with a brilliant, conflict-free emerald surrounded by a halo of diamonds.

"Before I came out here today," Julian continued, "I went to Liam’s bronze statue in the grove. I knelt before him, and I made a sacred promise. I promised him that as long as this heart beats in my chest, you and Hope will be loved, honored, cherished, and protected above all things on this earth. I promised him I would be the father Hope deserves and the partner you can lean on forever."

Julian looked into my eyes, a single tear of joy slipping down his cheek.

"Clara Hayes, will you do me the greatest honor of my life? Will you marry me?"

Hope looked up at me with wide, expectant eyes. "Say yes, Mommy! Say yes!"

Tears of overwhelming happiness poured down my cheeks. I dropped to my knees on the soft grass, wrapping my arms tightly around Julian and Hope, pulling them both into my embrace.

"Yes!" I cried, kissing Julian’s lips, then kissing Hope’s cheeks. "A thousand times yes, Julian! Yes!"

Julian slipped the emerald ring onto my finger, and as the afternoon sun reflected off the sparkling water of the lake, we embraced under the great willow tree—three lives woven together by tragedy, redeemed by courage, and crowned with an everlasting love.
