Chapter 3 - The Safe Deposit Box and the Cries of New Life

The driving rain turned the city streets into slick ribbons of black asphalt. My hands were clamped to the steering wheel, knuckles white, as I checked the rearview mirror every twenty seconds. I was convinced a black SUV was tailing me, but after making three erratic turns through downtown, the road behind me remained clear.

I pulled into the underground parking garage of the First Commonwealth Bank on 5th Avenue. My contractions were growing sharper, tightening across my lower abdomen with increasing frequency. My body was under immense physical and emotional stress, and I knew Hope was getting ready to arrive. But I couldn't go to the hospital—not until I secured what Liam had hidden.

Inside the marble-lined bank, the teller looked at my pale face, disheveled hair, and prominent belly with immediate concern.

"Ma'am? Are you alright? Do you need medical assistance?"

"I'm fine," I gasped, leaning heavily on the polished mahogany counter. "I need access to safe deposit box 414. Here is the key and my husband's death certificate."

Five minutes later, I was seated in a private, windowless viewing room in the bank’s subterranean vault. The heavy steel door clicked shut, leaving me in absolute silence.

With trembling hands, I turned key 414 in the dual-lock mechanism and pulled out a long metal box.

Inside lay a micro-cassette voice recorder, a USB flash drive, and a stack of notarized documents stamped with the crest of Vance Global Enterprises.

I picked up the micro-cassette recorder and pressed PLAY.

The speaker hissed with static before Liam’s voice filled the small room. He sounded weaker than I had ever heard him, his breathing punctuated by the rhythmic hum of hospital monitors.

"This recording is made on November 14th by Liam Hayes. If this tape is being listened to, I am deceased, and my heart has been transplanted into Julian Vance.

Three weeks ago, Marcus Vance—Julian’s younger brother and acting CEO of Vance Enterprises—approached me through an intermediary. Julian was dying. Marcus claimed he wanted to save his brother, but the contract he presented had a sinister clause. Marcus offered five million dollars: two point five to my family immediately upon my death, and two point five deposited into a trust for my daughter once Julian made a full recovery.

However, Marcus demanded that Julian must NEVER know the donor was paid or pre-arranged. Marcus wants Julian to believe the transplant was a random, miraculous match from the public list. Why? Because Julian Vance is a philanthropist who would refuse an organ obtained through financial coercion. Marcus needs Julian alive just long enough to sign over the controlling voting shares of Vance Global before Marcus pushes him out.

Clara... Dr. Barrett discovered something horrifying. Marcus Vance wasn't just waiting for me to die. Marcus’s private doctors altered my medication chart two weeks ago to accelerate my heart failure. Barrett caught it and reversed it, but we realized that if I fought back, Marcus would simply kill me in a way that ruined the heart, leaving you with nothing.

So I made a deal with the devil to protect you. I agreed to die peacefully. But I kept the original altered medical charts, the bank wire receipts, and the audio recording of Marcus Vance threatening Barrett. They are on the USB drive in this box.

If Marcus ever comes after you or tries to reclaim the money, use these files. Go to Julian Vance. Julian is not his brother. Julian is an honorable man who was kept in the dark.

Clara... I feel a sharp pain in my chest. My water is breaking... wait, no. My time is coming. Be brave, my love. Protect Hope."

The recording clicked off.

A violent, blinding spasm of pain ripped through my pelvis. I dropped the recorder onto the table and fell to my knees on the cold vault floor. A warm gush of fluid soaked through my jeans.

My water had broken.

"Help!" I cried out, clawing at the heavy door handle of the viewing room. "Someone help me!"

The bank manager rushed in, her eyes widening in horror as she saw me doubled over on the floor, clutching the metal safe deposit box to my chest.

"Call an ambulance! Now!" the manager screamed down the hall.

Within twenty minutes, paramedics were lifting me onto a gurney. Through the haze of labor pains and sheer terror, I clutched my leather handbag against my chest, refusing to let the paramedics touch it. Inside that bag was Liam's letter, the $2.5 million check, and the USB drive containing evidence of a billionaire’s attempted murder-by-proxy.

As the ambulance sirens wailed through the storm-soaked streets, heading toward St. Jude’s Maternity Clinic across town, the paramedic wiped my sweating forehead.

"Deep breaths, Clara! You're fully dilated. This baby is coming right now!"

I squeezed my eyes shut, gripping the metal rails of the gurney as another contraction tore through me. In that moment of agonizing physical transition, I didn't feel alone. I felt Liam’s warm hand pressing against my palm, his gentle whisper cutting through the screaming sirens: Love doesn't end when the body stops.

At 11:42 AM, amid tears, blood, and the echoes of grief, a loud, piercing cry filled the delivery room.

"It’s a girl," the doctor announced, smiling as she placed a warm, slippery, squirming baby onto my bare chest. "A beautiful, healthy baby girl."

May you like

I wrapped my arms around the tiny life Liam had died to protect. She opened her dark, searching eyes, looking directly into mine.

"Hello, Hope," I wept, kissing her wet forehead. "Your daddy gave everything so you could be here. And I promise you... nobody will ever hurt us."
