Chapter 6 - Evicted from the Palace of Lies

By two o'clock that afternoon, Daniel was released on a temporary emergency bail bond secured by his frantic personal attorney, who had warned him that the bond only kept him out of a holding cell until the formal federal indictment was handed down on Monday morning.
Stripped of his passport, his corporate credit cards, and his dignity, Daniel stepped out of a yellow cab in front of our three-story limestone townhouse in Greenwich, Connecticut.
His suit was wrinkled, his hair was disheveled, and his eyes were bloodshot from crying and hyperventilating in the back of the police cruiser.
He marched up the grand stone steps, pulled his brass house key from his pocket, and shoved it into the lock.
The key wouldn't turn.
Daniel cursed loudly, rattling the heavy brass doorknob with both hands. He kicked the solid oak door in frustration.
Before he could pull out his phone, the heavy front door swung open.
Standing in the entryway was not his submissive, weeping wife, but two towering, broad-shouldered private security guards wearing tactical black uniforms, accompanied by a woman holding a clipboard.
“Step back from the threshold, sir,” one of the guards said, resting his hand firmly on the stun baton attached to his tactical vest.
“What the hell is this?” Daniel shouted, his voice cracking with outrage. “This is my house! I live here! Move out of my way before I have you arrested for trespassing!”
The woman with the clipboard stepped forward. It was Brenda Campbell, one of the top property and estate attorneys in New England.
“Good afternoon, Mr. Sterling,” Brenda said coldly. “This property is not yours. It never was.”
“What are you talking about? My name is on the deed!”
Brenda flipped a page on her clipboard and presented a certified legal document.
“This property was purchased through the Sterling Family Trust in 2011, four years before your marriage to Audrey. Under the terms of the prenuptial agreement that you signed on June 12, 2017, any real estate acquired via maternal trust assets remains the sole, indivisible property of Audrey Sterling in the event of criminal misconduct, marital infidelity, or corporate malfeasance.”
Daniel staggered backward down the steps, shaking his head in disbelief. “No... no, that’s impossible. We amended that prenup two years ago!”
“The amendment you attempted to submit was notarized by a fraudulent notary whose license was revoked in 2021,” Brenda replied with razor-sharp precision. “Furthermore, Mrs. Sterling has secured an emergency temporary restraining order from the Fairfield County Superior Court. You are legally barred from coming within five hundred yards of this property, Mrs. Sterling, or any facility operated by Sterling Global.”
At that moment, two movers emerged from the side entrance carrying three large, industrial-grade black garbage bags. They dropped them unceremoniously on the wet gravel driveway at Daniel’s feet.
“What is that?” Daniel asked, his voice trembling.
“Your personal effects,” Brenda said plainly. “Your off-the-rack clothing, your running shoes, and your bathroom toiletries. Everything purchased with Mrs. Sterling’s private funds or corporate capital has been retained as evidence of financial diversion.”

The heavy mahogany door slammed shut in Daniel’s face, and the deadbolts engaged with three heavy, decisive clicks.
Daniel stood alone on the driveway in the pouring rain, staring at three trash bags containing the entirety of his remaining worldly possessions.
