Chapter 5 - The Public Humiliation at the Terminal

Before Daniel could pick the fake bracelet off the floor, the heavy, synchronized footsteps of four armed Port Authority Police officers echoed down the concourse.

Flanked beside them was Special Agent David Miller of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Financial Crimes Task Force.

“Daniel Sterling?” Agent Miller called out, his voice cutting through the airport noise like a siren. “Step away from the luggage and put your hands where we can see them.”

Travelers stopped in their tracks. Smartphones were instantly pulled out from pockets as dozens of bystanders began filming the unfolding spectacle.

“Wait! There’s been a terrible mistake!” Daniel shouted, backing away with his hands raised in surrender. “I am the Chief Operating Officer of Sterling Global! I have full executive immunity regarding corporate asset distribution!”

“Mr. Sterling, you are not under arrest for corporate distribution,” Agent Miller said calmly, producing a signed federal warrant. “You are being detained under an emergency federal warrant for grand larceny, wire fraud, identity theft, and the unlawful interstate transfer of stolen financial instruments.”

Chloe let out a blood-curdling shriek as an officer stepped forward and grabbed her designer handbag.

“Don't touch me! I’m just an independent marketing consultant! I don't know anything about his company!” she screamed, violently pulling away. “He gave me that jewelry! He bought those tickets! I’m the victim here!”

“Save it for the magistrate, Ms. Ruiz,” the officer replied, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her manicured wrists with a brutal, resounding click.

Daniel looked around in pure, unadulterated terror. Dozens of people were recording his downfall on their phones. A teenager in a hoodie was live-streaming the entire arrest to TikTok, laughing as Daniel’s designer suit was pinned against the glass partition of a high-end coffee shop.

“Audrey did this!” Daniel screamed at the cameras, his face turning bright crimson with rage and humiliation. “My wife framed me! She’s an unstable lunatic who wants to ruin my reputation! Audrey, I know you’re watching this! You will pay for this!”

Agent Miller picked up Daniel’s leather duffel bag, unzipped it in front of the crowd, and pulled out the stacks of stolen cash and the blue corporate folder bearing the forged signatures.

“You have the right to remain silent, Mr. Sterling,” Agent Miller said, reading from a laminated card as he forced Daniel’s hands behind his back. “Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

As the cold steel of the handcuffs locked around Daniel’s wrists, his phone, which had fallen onto the terminal floor, lit up with a notification from the Bloomberg Financial app:
