Chapter 15 - The Sweetest Taste of Unbreakable Freedom

One year after Daniel’s conviction, on a crisp, golden autumn evening, Sterling Global celebrated its thirty-fifth anniversary with a grand gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

The great hall was filled with hundreds of global leaders, dignitaries, business icons, and philanthropists.

I stood at the top of the grand marble staircase, wearing an immaculate emerald-green silk evening gown. Around my left wrist, catching the light of a thousand chandeliers, was my mother’s five-carat diamond tennis bracelet.

Beside me stood real partners, loyal colleagues, and friends who valued integrity above greed.

As the orchestra concluded a breathtaking symphony, Harold Finch and the board of directors raised their champagne flutes toward the staircase.

“To Eleanor Sterling’s greatest achievement,” Harold announced to the entire gathering. “To our Chief Executive Officer, Audrey Sterling—a leader of undeniable brilliance, unshakeable courage, and absolute grace under fire.”

The room erupted into thunderous, standing applause that echoed against the ancient stone walls of the museum.

I raised my glass, smiling warmly at the sea of faces, feeling the cool, solid weight of the diamond bracelet against my skin.

I thought back to that dark night at two in the morning, when a traitor had kissed my forehead and whispered that I was poor, weak, and blind.

He had thought that taking my money would leave me with nothing.

He never understood that my wealth was never just the balance in a bank account or the stones inside a safe. My wealth was my mother’s blood running through my veins, my unyielding intellect, and the unshakeable truth that no matter how dark the night may seem, the light of justice will always expose the shadows.

I took a slow sip of champagne, looking out over the magnificent city I had conquered, knowing that my life did not end when he walked out that door.

It had only just begun.
