Chapter 10 - The Desperate Press Conference Ambush

On Monday morning, news of the federal indictments against Daniel Sterling and Chloe Ruiz broke across every major financial newspaper and television network in the country.
The Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and CNBC ran front-page stories detailing the multi-million-dollar embezzlement scheme, praising Sterling Global’s rapid internal audit response and highlighting the company’s unyielding stability under my sole executive leadership.
Backed into a corner and facing decades in prison, Daniel attempted one final, pathetic gamble.
At 11:00 AM, Daniel stood outside the federal courthouse in Lower Manhattan, surrounded by a hastily assembled gaggle of tabloid reporters and paparazzi. He had hired a sleazy, high-profile defense attorney known for smearing victims in the media to manufacture public sympathy.
“My client is the victim of a corporate smear campaign orchestrated by his estranged wife!” the defense attorney shouted into the cluster of microphones. “Audrey Sterling used her family’s immense wealth and political connections to fabricate financial records, frame her husband, and eject him from the company he helped build!”
Daniel stepped up to the microphone, wearing an ill-fitting suit he had borrowed from a cheap outlet store. He wiped fake tears from his eyes, attempting to put on the performance of a lifetime.
“I dedicated seven years of my life to Audrey and Sterling Global!” Daniel sobbed dramatically. “I stayed silent while she suffered from severe paranoia and emotional instability! She framed me because she found out I was planning to file for divorce! She is a vindictive, dangerous woman who will destroy anyone who doesn't bow to her will!”
Suddenly, the crowd of reporters gasped and turned their cameras away from Daniel.
A sleek, black armored SUV pulled up to the curb. The door opened, and I stepped out onto the sidewalk, accompanied by Marcus Vance and two armed private security details.
I walked directly toward the courthouse steps with calm, effortless elegance. The flashes of a hundred cameras illuminated the midday grey sky like lightning.
“Mrs. Sterling! Mrs. Sterling!” a reporter from CNN shouted. “Your husband claims you framed him out of marital jealousy! How do you respond to his allegations?”
I stopped at the base of the courthouse steps, turning to face the wall of cameras. Daniel stood fifteen feet away, his mouth hanging open in shock, his face draining of all color as our eyes met.
I didn't raise my voice. I didn't lose my temper. I spoke with the calm, devastating authority of a woman holding all the cards.
“Mr. Sterling is entitled to present whatever fairy tales he chooses to the media,” I said clearly into the microphones. “However, the Southern District of New York does not trade in fairy tales. They trade in forensic evidence.”
Marcus Vance stepped forward, holding up a certified binder for the cameras to capture.
“This morning,” Marcus announced, “we submitted to the District Attorney’s office a certified forensic toxicology report confirming that Daniel Sterling administered a lethal concentration of prescription narcotics into Mrs. Sterling’s beverage on the night of his attempted escape.”
The press erupted into absolute chaos. Reporters shouted over one another, shoving microphones closer to Daniel, whose knees visibly buckled.
“Furthermore,” I added, looking directly into the primary news camera, “we have handed over complete video surveillance from our home security system showing Mr. Sterling breaking into our safe, alongside complete audio recordings of his phone calls from Gate 42 at JFK Airport.”
I turned my gaze toward Daniel. He looked like a condemned man standing before the gallows.

“You said I never saw this coming, Daniel,” I whispered, loud enough for every microphone to catch. “The truth is, you never saw me at all.”
Without waiting for another question, I turned on my heel, walked up the courthouse steps, and entered the building, leaving Daniel to be swarmed and devoured by the very press corps he had summoned to save him.
