Chapter 9 - The Shadow Council: Sitting at the Head of the Table Where Blood Dictates Law

At 2:30 AM, Larkin convened an emergency meeting of the five syndicate families at an underground bunker beneath Wall Street. The room was lined with reinforced steel, guarded by twenty men armed with assault rifles.
When the heavy blast doors opened, Larkin walked in—and for the first time in the history of the New York underworld, he did not walk alone.
I strode beside him, wearing a fresh, tailored charcoal suit that accentuated every line of my silhouette, my sharp bob immaculate, and my ceramic blade tucked into my belt.
The remaining elders of the syndicate families gasped.
"Larkin," old man Bellini rasped, slamming his fist onto the mahogany table. "What is this disrespect? You bring a woman, an accountant, into the inner sanctum during a state of war?"
Larkin didn't sit at the head of the table. He pulled out the high-backed leather chair and gestured for me to sit.
I took the seat without hesitation, resting my elbows on the polished wood and locking eyes with the four most terrifying men in the city.
"Mr. Bellini," I said, my voice smooth, calm, and resonant. "At 12:15 tonight, twelve million dollars of your personal offshore funds were frozen because you used an unsecured Castiglione routing server. If you speak to me or Larkin with that tone again, I will permanently transfer those funds to the United States Treasury as an anonymous tax donation."
Bellini’s jaw dropped. He looked at his own financial adviser, who checked his tablet, went white as a sheet, and nodded frantically.

"The Castigliones are finished," Larkin announced, standing behind my chair with his hands resting possessively on my shoulders. "Penelope Woods holds the digital key to every asset in this city. From this moment on, her word is my law. Anyone who opposes her opposes me."
The room fell into dead silence. One by one, the ruthless titans of New York lowered their heads in submission.
