Chapter 10 - The Betrayal Within: When the Man Who Taught Me to Disappear Turns Against Us

We moved toward the Brooklyn Navy Yard in a convoy of armored black Suburbans. The rain had begun to fall in heavy, rhythmic sheets, washing over the asphalt like blood down a drain.
Sitting in the back of the SUV, Larkin checked the clip of his rifle. "When we enter Warehouse 14, Don Castiglione will have his inner guard. We take Castiglione alive so you can get your answers."
"He won't give them easily," I murmured, watching the red taillights ahead of us.
Suddenly, our vehicle swerved violently as an explosive shockwave rattled the chassis. The lead SUV in our convoy erupted into a ball of orange fire.
"Ambush!" Marcus yelled from the front passenger seat.

"I taught you well, Penelope," Vance laughed, his raspy voice cutting through the storm. "I taught you how to hide in the books. But you forgot that I wrote the original ledger."
Marcus had betrayed us. The syndicate’s top enforcer had been bought by Vance and Castiglione months ago.

"Out of the car, Larkin," Marcus sneered. "Or I put a bullet through your girl’s brain right now."
Larkin looked at me, a silent message passing between our eyes. We had one play left.
