Chapter 15 - The Empire Is Ours: How the Invisible Secretary Became the Most Feared Woman in New York

Six months later, the morning sun rose over the glass towers of Manhattan, casting golden light across the forty-second floor of the Steves Financial Tower.

The gray cubicles were gone, replaced with open marble terraces, polished glass, and state-of-the-art security networks.

I sat behind the massive mahogany desk that had once belonged to Larkin alone. Dressed in a sharp white designer pantsuit with red-bottom heels resting on the footrest, I reviewed the morning reports. The city was peaceful, running with mathematical efficiency under our absolute control.

The heavy office door opened.

Larkin walked in, holding two porcelain cups. He wore a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up, his wedding band gleaming under the office lights.

He walked over, placed my favorite caramel macchiato on the desk, and leaned down, capturing my lips in a deep, tender, and possessive kiss.

"Good morning, Mrs. Steves," he murmured against my lips, his eyes sparkling with unconditional love and respect.

"Good morning, Mr. Steves," I smiled, tracing the line of his jaw. "Did you bring me coffee just to interrupt my financial audit?"

Larkin chuckled, pulling me up from the leather chair and wrapping his arms around my waist, resting his forehead against mine.

"I brought you coffee because for three years, you served me while hiding the fiercest soul in the world," he whispered. "Now, it’s my turn to spend the rest of my life making sure you have everything you ever dreamed of."

I looked out over the skyline of New York—the city that had tried to break me, the city that had tried to hide me, and the city that now belonged to us.

I was no longer the invisible girl in the gray slacks.

I was the architect of an empire, the conqueror of the underworld, and the woman who proved that the quietest person in the room is often the one holding the blade.
