Chapter 8 - Bail, Betrayal, And The Mistress Who Tried To Empty The Accounts

By ten o'clock the following morning, the news of Adrian Cole’s arrest and Vanessa Vale’s fraud had obliterated the front pages of the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, The New York Times, and every viral tabloid across the globe.
Cole Meridian’s stock plummeted by an unprecedented sixty-eight percent within the first forty-five minutes of market opening.
Trading was halted four separate times by the circuit breakers, but every time the stock resumed trading, massive institutional sell orders—orchestrated by the Hartwell Strategic Trust—pushed the price further into the abyss.
Meanwhile, inside the grimy holding cells of the Manhattan Criminal Court, Vanessa Vale used her single allocated phone call.
She didn’t call her defense attorney.
She called her secret lover and accomplice, Damon Croft—a rogue hedge fund trader in Zurich who held the secondary authorization codes to Cole Meridian’s emergency offshore liquidity reserves.
“Damon! It’s me!” Vanessa hissed into the receiver, clutching the greasy plastic phone against her ear while keeping her voice low. “The whole thing blew up! Adrian is in jail, Eleanor is the head of Hartwell, and the SEC has warrants!”
“I saw the news, Vanessa,” Damon’s cold voice crackled from Switzerland. “Cole Meridian is finished. The company is heading into liquidation.”
“Listen to me!” Vanessa panicked. “Adrian gave me the secondary administrative token for the $50 million slush fund in the Cayman National Bank account. The funds haven’t been frozen by the court yet! I’m going to make bail in two hours. I need you to initiate an immediate wire transfer to our private account in Singapore! We take the fifty million and disappear to Bali!”
“Send the authentication hash,” Damon agreed quickly. “I will execute the transfer the second the Swiss clearing window opens.”
Vanessa recited the encrypted alphanumeric codes from memory, smiling through her stained makeup with wicked satisfaction. She thought that even if her high-society dreams were shattered, fifty million dollars of stolen corporate treasury cash would allow her to live like royalty in Southeast Asia.
What Vanessa didn’t know was that every single cellular tower, internet gateway, and communication node surrounding the Manhattan detention complex was being monitored in real-time by the Hartwell cybersecurity division.
Up on the eightieth floor of Hartwell Tower, our chief cybersecurity officer tapped his headset.
“Madam Chairman, we intercepted the authorization hash. Vanessa Vale just attempted an unauthorized international wire transfer of $50,000,000 from Cole Meridian’s offshore account #8842.”
I sat behind my massive mahogany desk, reviewing the legal filings with Julian.
“Reroute the transfer,” I commanded calmly. “Trap the funds in an escrow vault under the jurisdiction of the New York State Attorney General’s Financial Crimes Bureau. And notify the Swiss Federal Banking Commission to issue an Interpol Red Notice for Damon Croft immediately.”
“Done,” the technician replied, his fingers flying across the keyboard. “The transfer has been flagged as grand larceny in progress. The funds are secured in state custody, and Swiss authorities have just detained Mr. Croft at Zurich International Airport.”
Two hours later, Vanessa’s high-priced bail bondsman managed to post her $500,000 bond using her remaining personal savings.
Vanessa practically sprinted out of the courthouse doors, clutching her designer coat tightly around her shoulders, completely ignoring the swarm of reporters shouting questions at her.
She hailed a yellow cab and threw herself into the back seat. “JFK International Airport! Terminal 4! Step on it!”
She pulled out a burner phone she had stashed in her locker, dialing Damon’s number to confirm their escape flight.
The line didn’t connect to Damon.
Instead, a chillingly polite voice answered:
“Swiss Federal Police, Financial Crimes Division. If you are attempting to reach Mr. Croft, he is currently in custody awaiting extradition to the United States. Have a safe trip to the airport, Ms. Vale. Federal marshals are already waiting at Terminal 4.”
The phone slipped from Vanessa’s paralyzed fingers.

She looked out the rear window of the cab and saw three unmarked black SUVs pull up directly behind her, their red and blue grille lights flashing violently.
Her golden escape had turned into a steel cage.
