Chapter 12 - Adrian’s Desperate Knees On Marble And The Cold Taste Of Truth

While Vanessa began her twenty-two-year federal prison sentence, Adrian Cole was out on strict house arrest, wearing an electronic GPS ankle monitor while awaiting his own criminal trial.
Stripped of his CEO title, his executive salary, and his corporate credit cards, Adrian was forced to watch from his television as the Hartwell Strategic Trust completely restructured Cole Meridian.
Under my leadership, the stock price soared by three hundred percent in three weeks, reaching an all-time historical high of one hundred and twenty dollars per share.
The company was thriving without him. The business world hailed Eleanor Hart as a financial visionary, while Adrian Cole was universally mocked as the most foolish, incompetent nepo-baby in Wall Street history.
Desperate, broke, and facing a guaranteed ten-year prison sentence, Adrian violated his bail perimeter.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Adrian slipped past his private guards and took a subway to the Hartwell Tower in downtown Manhattan.
He waited outside the private executive lobby beneath the pouring rain for four hours, soaked to the skin, shivering in a cheap raincoat, watching the revolving doors.
At five-thirty, the lobby doors opened.
Flanked by Marcus and Julian, I stepped out toward my awaiting armored Maybach. I wore a tailored cream trench coat, holding a leather portfolio containing the final acquisition documents for our European expansion.
Adrian broke through the rain, lunging forward with wild, desperate eyes.
“Eleanor! Eleanor, please!” Adrian screamed, his voice hoarse from crying in the cold.
Marcus instantly drew his concealed sidearm, stepping in front of me with lethal intent, while four private security guards tackled Adrian to the wet sidewalk.
“Hold,” I commanded softly, raising a single hand.
Marcus signaled the guards to ease their grip, though they kept Adrian pinned down against the wet marble steps outside the lobby entrance.
Adrian looked up at me, tears mixing with the freezing rain streaming down his face.
Then, in front of dozens of pedestrians, security officers, and building employees, Adrian Cole—the once-arrogant billionaire who had beaten me with a belt—crawled forward on his knees and pressed his forehead against the wet stone at my feet.
“Eleanor... please, I beg of you,” Adrian sobbed uncontrollably, trembling with pathetic desperation. “I will do anything. I will sign a full confession. I will transfer all my remaining personal trust shares to you for free. I will clean your shoes! Just please... ask the DA to reduce the charges to probation! I cannot survive in prison! They will kill me in there!”
I looked down at the man who had once stood over me with a belt in our Greenwich living room, mocking my quietness, telling me I was worthless without him.
There was no anger left in my heart. There was only the cold, unyielding clarity of absolute justice.
“Adrian,” I said, my voice cutting through the patter of the rain like a sharp blade.
He looked up, a glimmer of desperate, pathetic hope in his bloodshot eyes. “Yes, Eleanor? You’ll help me?”
I looked straight into his soul.
“When you struck me with that belt five times, did you stop when I stayed silent?”
Adrian’s breath caught in his throat. “I... I was blind, Eleanor! Vanessa tricked me!”
“When you kicked the divorce papers at my feet and ordered me into the street with nothing, did you show a single ounce of mercy?”
Adrian began to tremble violently, unable to speak.
“You reap what you sow, Adrian,” I said calmly, stepping around him without looking back. “You chose cruelty. Now you will learn what it costs.”
I stepped into the warm interior of the Maybach.
Marcus closed the heavy door, locking out the cold rain and Adrian’s desperate screams.

Two NYPD cruisers pulled up to the curb with their sirens wailing, having tracked Adrian’s ankle monitor violation. The officers dragged Adrian to his feet, threw him against the hood of the police car, and re-arrested him on the spot for felony bail violation.
As the Maybach pulled away smoothly into the city traffic, I looked forward, ready for the final chapter of my new life.
