Chapter 2 - The Midnight Phone Call That Froze Cole Meridian’s Trillion-Dollar Lifeline

The heavy oak doors of the Cole estate clicked shut behind me, severing eight years of marriage in a single heartbeat.

I walked down the long, winding cobblestone driveway beneath the glow of the landscape lanterns. The cool night breeze cut through my torn blouse, chilling the burning welts across my back, but I held my head high. Every step away from that house felt like shedding a layer of poison.

Once I reached the public road beyond the iron gates, I reached into my handbag, pulled out my primary phone, and dialed a private, encrypted satellite number that only three living people in the world possessed.

The line connected on the very first ring.

“Good evening, Madam Chairman,” a deep, impeccably calm voice answered. It was Julian Vance, the Chief Executive Director of the Hartwell Strategic Trust and my most trusted legal guardian since my father’s death.

“Julian,” I said, my voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through my veins. “Initiate Project Blackout.”

There was a half-second pause on the other end—the only sign of Julian’s intense focus. “Madam, are you referring to the Cole Meridian restructuring facility? The final syndicated loan of $3.2 billion is scheduled to clear the escrow accounts at seven-thirty tomorrow morning.”

“Cancel it,” I commanded. “Revoke all liquidity guarantees. Issue an immediate recall on the $850 million short-term bridging bonds we purchased through our offshore shell accounts last quarter. And instruct our prime brokerage desks to execute a full credit freeze across all Cole Meridian subsidiaries worldwide.”

Julian did not ask questions. He didn’t need to. He had spent months watching Adrian Cole squander capital on reckless acquisitions while treating the Hartwell name with ignorant contempt.

“Consider it done, Eleanor,” Julian replied smoothly. “What about your security? Where are you right now?”

“I am at the main gate of the Greenwich estate. Send Marcus and the security detail to pick me up. And Julian?”

“Yes, Madam?”

“Have our private medical team meet us at the penthouse. I have physical evidence that needs to be officially documented for criminal prosecution.”

A deadly silence fell over the line. Julian’s tone dropped an octave, turning ice-cold. “Did he touch you?”

“He used a belt,” I said flatly. “And I have forty-eight minutes of uncompressed, high-definition audio capturing the entire assault, his extortion, and Vanessa Vale’s conspiracy. We are going to destroy them legally, financially, and publicly.”

“Marcus is two minutes away,” Julian said, his voice laced with venom for Adrian Cole. “We will take everything from him.”

I ended the call just as two black, unmarked armored Maybachs glided silently around the bend, their headlights cutting through the darkness. The lead vehicle pulled up alongside me, and Marcus—a former British Special Air Service commander who had overseen Hartwell family security for over a decade—stepped out into the night.

His eyes immediately fell upon the torn fabric at my shoulder and the dark bloodstains seeping through the silk. His jaw clenched tight enough to crack bone.

“Madam Chairman,” Marcus said, bowing his head slightly before opening the rear passenger door. “We are ready.”

“Let’s go home, Marcus,” I said, stepping into the leather-trimmed interior of the vehicle.

As the Maybach accelerated smoothly down the highway toward Manhattan, I watched the distant lights of Adrian’s estate vanish in the rearview mirror.

Inside that house, Adrian and Vanessa were undoubtedly uncorking another bottle of champagne, laughing about how easily they had discarded the 'penniless' wife who had stood in the way of Vanessa becoming the first lady of Cole Meridian.

They thought they had won the war.

They had no idea that the $3.2 billion rescue package they desperately needed to prevent Cole Meridian from defaulting on its public debt was already dissolving into thin air.
