Chapter 8 - The Disgraced Psychiatrist and the Million-Dollar Black Market Diagnosis

Inside the quiet study of the Greenwich mansion, Jason Vance took a slow sip of his twenty-year-old single malt scotch, savoring the burn.
"Where is the transport van?" Rachel asked, checking her diamond-encrusted watch. "You said the private medical team from Clearview would be here by eight-fifteen."
"They’re idling two miles away at the highway rest stop," Vance replied, leaning against Ethan’s desk. "The moment we stage the scene upstairs, I send a signal. Two orderlies with a medical restraint gurney will walk through that front door, sedate the girl, and transport her under state psychiatric transport codes. By the time Ethan’s plane touches down tomorrow, she will be under a seventy-two-hour involuntary hold behind three sets of locked steel doors. No visitors, no phone calls, no outside attorneys."
Rachel smiled, a look of pure, unadulterated malice in her eyes. "You have no idea how much I hated playing the doting stepmother to that little brat. Every single day, listening to her talk about Grace... 'Mommy liked the ocean, Mommy used to bake cookies, Mommy read me this book.' Grace was weak. She had all this wealth and spent her life volunteering at community centers and collecting seashells."
"Grace was an amateur," Vance sneered, adjusting his glasses. "She built an ironclad trust, but she forgot that human biology is fragile. Paperwork can’t stop a well-placed chemical compound."
Vance reached into his briefcase and pulled out a small digital voice recorder. "Now, let’s create the audio documentation for the 911 dispatch. I need you to scream, Rachel. Knock over the brass floor lamp, tear your sleeve, and scratch your own forearm with this letter opener. Make it look like the child had a violent manic outburst when you tried to put her to bed."
Rachel set down her glass, grabbed the heavy antique brass lamp from the corner, and raised it above her head, preparing to smash it against the hardwood floor.
CRASH!
The sound that exploded through the house was not the brass lamp.
It was the front door of the mansion being blown off its hinges by a hydraulic tactical breaching ram.
"POLICE! STATE TROOPERS! DON'T MOVE!"
The deafening roar of stun grenades echoed through the foyer, followed instantly by the heavy, rhythmic thud of tactical boots pounding across the hardwood floor.
Rachel shrieked, dropping the brass lamp onto the Persian rug. Vance leaped backward, knocking Ethan’s executive leather chair to the ground, his face instantly draining of all color.
"What the hell—" Vance shouted, lunging toward the desk to grab the vials of poison.
"DON'T TOUCH THE DESK! HANDS IN THE AIR! ON THE GROUND NOW!"
Six heavily armed State Police tactical officers in full black body armor swarmed into the study, their assault rifles raised, high-intensity weapon lights blinding Vance and Rachel.
Vance froze, his hands trembling violently in the air. Rachel backed into the bookshelf, her eyes wide with unadulterated panic, hyperventilating.
"There’s a mistake!" Rachel screamed, her voice cracking into shrill hysteria. "There are burglars in the house! Call the police! I’m the homeowner!"
"Shut up and get on the ground!" a tactical officer commanded, grabbing Vance by the shoulder and forcing him violently down onto the Persian rug, planting a knee into his spine and securing his wrists in heavy-duty steel handcuffs.
Rachel was pushed against the mahogany paneling, her arms yanked behind her back as another officer clicked a second pair of cuffs around her wrists.
"You can't do this!" Rachel shrieked, thrashing against the officer's grip. "Do you know who my husband is? My husband is Ethan Parker! He’s in Boston! He will have all of your badges for this!"
Footsteps echoed slowly down the hallway.
The tactical officers parted, stepping aside in crisp military formation.
Ethan Parker walked into the study.
He was wearing his dark wool coat, his hands resting calmly in his pockets. Beside him walked Clara Morrison and Special Agent David Harris.
Rachel’s voice died in her throat. Her jaw dropped, her eyes bulging as if she were looking at a ghost rising from an open grave.
"E... Ethan?" Rachel stammered, her face turning an ash-gray color. "You’re... you’re in Boston... your flight..."
Ethan walked over to the desk. He did not look at Rachel. He looked down at Jason Vance, who was pinned to the floor, his silver glasses knocked sideways against the rug.

Ethan picked up the velvet pouch containing the vials of digitalis toxin. He held it up to the light, turning it slowly between his fingers.
"The Boston flight was canceled eight hours ago, Rachel," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly calm, lower than a whisper, yet filling the entire room with crushing weight. "I never left Greenwich."
