Chapter 6 - The Boston Alibi and the Live Stream from My Own Bedroom

To ensure Rachel and Jason walked completely into the trap without suspecting a thing, Ethan had to maintain the illusion of his Boston business trip flawlessly.
At 5:30 PM, Ethan checked into a luxury suite at the Boston Harbor Hotel using his personal assistant, who carried his secondary phone and registered his corporate credit card at the front desk. Marcus’s digital team routed Ethan’s primary phone signal through a secure VPN node located directly in downtown Boston.
At 6:15 PM, Ethan called Rachel via FaceTime from inside the command van, using a high-resolution, dynamic digital background of the Boston skyline that mirrored the exact weather and twilight conditions outside the Boston Harbor Hotel.
Rachel answered on the second ring. She was sitting in the Greenwich living room, wearing a soft gray sweater, a glass of pinot noir resting on the side table. Her face was the picture of calm, devoted domesticity.
"Hi, darling," Rachel said, smiling warmly into the camera. "How did the board meeting go?"
"Exhausting," Ethan replied, leaning back in his chair with a convincing look of corporate fatigue. "The acquisition team is pushing for a full restructuring. I’m going to be stuck in dinner meetings until midnight, and tomorrow looks even worse."
"Oh, sweetheart, I’m so sorry," Rachel sighed with exaggerated sympathy. "Don't work yourself to the bone. Lily and I miss you so much."
"How is Lily doing tonight?" Ethan asked, watching her eyes closely.
Rachel let out a long, heavy sigh, casting her gaze downward. "Ethan... I didn't want to worry you while you’re closing such a massive deal, but... we had another terrible afternoon. Mrs. Gable had to leave early. Lily threw a complete tantrum, screaming at the top of her lungs and breaking dishes in the kitchen. I had to lock myself in the study for twenty minutes just to calm down."
Ethan felt a violent surge of fury burn in the back of his throat, but his expression remained entirely neutral, painted with weary concern. "Are you serious? Did she hurt you?"
"No, I’m fine," Rachel said, wiping a phantom tear from the corner of her eye. "But Ethan, we have to face reality. Lily is getting worse every single week. I spoke with a renowned child crisis specialist this afternoon, Dr. Jason Vance. He recommended having an emergency pediatric crisis team do an on-site evaluation tonight."
"Tonight?" Ethan asked, raising an eyebrow. "Without me there?"
"I know it’s hard, darling, but if we wait, she might hurt herself," Rachel pleaded, her voice trembling with manufactured emotion. "If the doctors recommend a short, seventy-two-hour observation hold at a specialized clinic, we have to trust the professionals. I can sign the temporary intake forms as her stepmother until you get back on Wednesday."
"Let’s see how she is in the morning, Rachel," Ethan said smoothly, playing the hesitant, conflicted father. "Don't do anything drastic until I look over the paperwork."
"Of course, my love. I won't do anything unless it’s an absolute emergency," Rachel promised softly. "Get some sleep, Ethan. I love you."
"I’ll see you soon, Rachel."
Ethan ended the call.
In the van, Marcus and Clara were already monitoring four separate feeds. Two unmarked Connecticut State Police cruisers and an unmarked black surveillance van carrying tactical investigators had pulled into the secluded estate across the street, shielded by dense evergreen hedges.
Special Agent David Harris, a senior investigator with the State Attorney’s Financial Crimes and Child Exploitation Task Force, tapped on the window of Ethan’s van. Ethan slid the door open.
Harris climbed inside, holding a thick folder. "Mr. Parker. We’ve reviewed the toxicology reports from Dr. Bennett, the mass spectrometer readings, and the intercepted communications between your wife and Jason Vance. The State Attorney has issued an emergency sealed warrant for both suspects: attempted second-degree murder, child endangerment with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and conspiracy to commit multi-million-dollar estate fraud."
"What is the tactical plan, Agent Harris?" Ethan asked.
"We let Jason Vance enter the residence at eight o'clock," Harris explained. "We allow them to prepare the contaminated substances and bring out the falsified emergency commitment documents. The moment Vance pulls out the syringe or dropper to dose your daughter, or the moment they dial their corrupt private transport service, our entry team breaches the house. We catch them in the direct commission of a felony on camera."
Ethan shook his head firmly. "No. My daughter is not going to be anywhere near that room when Vance walks through the door."
"Mr. Parker, we need the active scene—"
"You have the mass spectrometer data, you have the recorded phone calls, and you have their digital murder plot against me," Ethan said, his voice cutting like a razor. "Lily is being extracted from that house right now through the basement bulkhead before Vance arrives. You can place a decoy in the bedroom or rely on the living room cameras. But my child will not spend another second as bait."
Agent Harris looked at Ethan, saw the unyielding fire in the father's eyes, and slowly nodded. "Fair enough. Team Bravo, execute silent extraction of the child via the lower terrace."
Ten minutes later, Clara carried a sleeping Lily, wrapped securely in a wool blanket, into the back of the medical transport vehicle. Lily had been given a mild, completely safe pediatric sedative by Dr. Bennett to ensure she slept peacefully through the entire operation.
Ethan stood beside his daughter, kissing her forehead. "You’re safe now, baby. It’s over."
Ethan turned back to the surveillance monitors.
The clock on the dashboard read 7:55 PM.
