Chapter 7 - The Forged Power of Attorney and the Ghost of Grace’s Legacy

The front door of the estate swung open before Jason Vance even reached the porch.
Rachel stood in the foyer, wearing a black silk robe, her face flushed with tense anticipation. Vance stepped inside, shaking the evening mist from his charcoal overcoat. He was a tall, sharp-featured man in his late forties, wearing thin, silver-rimmed glasses and carrying a heavy leather briefcase.
"Did you secure the house?" Vance asked immediately, his voice echoing through the hidden microphones.
"The kid is upstairs in her room, fast asleep," Rachel replied, locking the double deadbolts. "I checked on her ten minutes ago. She hasn't made a sound."
"Good," Vance said, walking straight into Ethan’s private study and setting his briefcase on the mahogany desk. He popped the brass latches open and pulled out three thick stacks of legal documents bound with blue backing paper. "Here is the emergency ex-parte petition for temporary medical conservatorship. I’ve already secured the forged stamp from Dr. Sterling’s clinic in White Plains. It certifies that Lily Parker exhibits acute, treatment-resistant violent psychosis and poses an immediate danger to herself and others."
Rachel picked up the top document, scanning it with a predatory smile. "And the Rhode Island trust transfer?"
Vance pulled out a second document. "Right here. A durable Power of Attorney granting you full discretionary authority over the Newport real estate and liquid accounts, ostensibly to cover Lily’s 'specialized clinical care' at forty thousand dollars a month. All it needs is Ethan’s signature."
"Ethan will never sign this voluntarily," Rachel noted, pouring two glasses of scotch from the decanter on the sideboard.
"He won't have to," Vance said with a cold smirk, pulling a high-resolution optical signature-transfer stamp from his pocket. "I spent the weekend analyzing Ethan’s signatures on your joint tax returns and the Greenwich deed. This mechanical pressure-transfer stamp replicates his handwriting down to the micron. Once Lily is locked inside the Clearview high-security wing tonight, Ethan will be in a state of complete emotional collapse. By the time he realizes the trust documents have been filed with the Newport probate registry on Friday morning, Phase Two will already be underway."
Vance pulled a small, dark velvet pouch from his inside coat pocket. He unzipped it and placed two clear glass vials and a sterile medical syringe onto Ethan’s desk.
In the surveillance van, Ethan, Agent Harris, and Clara watched the high-definition feed in stunned silence.
"What is that?" Rachel asked, staring at the vials.
"Concentrated digitalis toxin and synthetic potassium chloride," Vance replied casually, swirling his scotch. "Colorless, odorless, completely soluble in hot liquids. On Thursday morning, after Ethan returns from Boston, you put six drops into his morning double-espresso. Within twenty minutes, he will experience severe shortness of breath, followed by acute ventricular fibrillation. To the emergency paramedics, it will look like a textbook massive coronary brought on by the immense stress of his daughter’s sudden psychiatric institutionalization."
Rachel smiled, picking up the glass vial and holding it up to the study lamp. "And the autopsy?"
"There won't be one," Vance stated confidently. "Ethan has a documented family history of early cardiovascular mortality—his paternal grandfather died of a heart attack at fifty-two. Combined with the recent trauma of his daughter's breakdown, no medical examiner in Fairfield County will order a full forensic toxicology panel. The death certificate will be signed within twenty-four hours. You inherit the Greenwich estate, the life insurance policies, and full control of Lily’s Newport trust. We liquidate the Rhode Island villa by next summer for six million cash, transfer the proceeds to our holding company in the Cayman Islands, and Lily remains permanently tucked away in Clearview."
"To a brilliant partnership," Rachel whispered, raising her glass of scotch.
"To Grace’s fortune," Vance replied, clinking his glass against hers.
In the surveillance van, Clara was crying silent tears of rage. "They were going to erase my entire family... Grace, Lily, Ethan... all of them."

Agent Harris clicked his radio headset, his voice dripping with icy authority.
"All units, this is Harris. We have full, undeniable confirmation of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, possession of lethal controlled substances, and aggravated grand larceny. Tactical teams Alpha and Bravo—breach the residence now."
