Chapter 9 - THE TRAP AT THE WAREHOUSE

Two hours later, Marcus was secured in the underground holding cells.
Dr. Vance had patched up Marcus’s wounds just enough to keep him talking.
In Harland’s private study, the atmosphere was thick with smoke and burning tension.
“Vance is making his move,” Harland said, pacing the room with heavy strides.
“He poisoned my sister to destabilize our leadership.”
“And he used Marcus to create a blind spot in our security.”
Ru sat in a leather armchair, holding a fresh cup of tea.
“What are you going to do?” she asked.
“I’m going to end it tonight,” Harland stopped walking.
“Vance is waiting at Pier 54 on the Detroit River.”
“He thinks I’m vulnerable because of Belle and Elena.”
“I’m going to show him how wrong he is.”
Ru stood up.
“I’m coming with you.”
Harland turned sharply.
“No.”
“Yes,” Ru countered, her voice ringing with stubborn steel.
“You’re going into a gunfight.”
“Which means people are going to get hurt.”
“You need a medic on your team more than you need another guy with a gun.”
Harland stared at her in disbelief.
“You are a nurse, Ru. Not a soldier.”
“I survived growing up on the east side of Detroit,” Ru snapped back.
“A mafia shootout is just an emergency room with louder noises.”
A slow, reluctant smile touched the corner of Harland’s mouth.

“God help me,” Harland muttered.
“Get your coat.”
