Chapter 13 - THE CHOICES WE MAKE

Two months later, the spring flowers were blooming across the Voss estate gardens.

Ru stood outside the Detroit medical licensing board building, holding a stiff white envelope.

Her hands shook slightly as she slipped her finger under the flap.

She pulled out the single sheet of paper.

PASSED.

Tears of absolute relief welled up in her eyes.

She pulled out her phone and dialed the only number she had memorized by heart.

It answered on the second ring.

“Harland.”

“I passed,” Ru whispered into the phone, her voice cracking with emotion.

Silence on the other end for a fraction of a second.

Then Harland’s deep voice answered, warm and unmistakably proud.

“I knew you would.”

“Where are you?”

“Standing on the sidewalk on Woodward Avenue.”

“Don't move,” Harland said instantly.

“I’ll be there in five minutes.”

True to his word, a black SUV pulled up to the curb sixty seconds later.

The rear door opened, and Harland stepped out onto the pavement.

He wasn't wearing his usual dark coat.

He wore a simple charcoal jacket, and his eyes were completely free of the dark shadows that had haunted them on the night they met.

He walked straight toward her, ignoring the startled stares of passing pedestrians.

Before Ru could say a word, Harland pulled her into his arms and kissed her.

It wasn't the kiss of a mafia boss claiming territory.

It was the kiss of a man who had finally found home.
