Chapter 15 - RECKONING AND A NEW DAWN — THE END

Six months later, the East Side Community Medical Clinic was a beacon of light in a neighborhood that had seen too much darkness.
The waiting room was clean, bright, and filled with patients who finally had access to quality care.
Ru walked down the hallway in her crisp white lab coat, holding a clipboard.
Dr. Callaway.
The title still felt new, but it fit her perfectly.
She stepped into Examination Room Three.
Sitting on the patient table was Belle, swinging her legs and wearing a matching toy stethoscope around her neck.
And leaning against the wall beside her was Harland.
Watching them both with a quiet, absolute peace in his eyes.
Ru closed the door, walked over, and kissed Harland gently on the cheek.
“How’s my favorite patient?” Ru asked Belle.
“Healthy!” Belle announced proudly.
“And Daddy says we’re getting ice cream.”
Harland wrapped his arm around Ru’s waist, pulling her close against his side.
“Only if Dr. Callaway approves the prescription,” Harland murmured, a warm smile touching his lips.
Ru looked at the man who had terrified half of Detroit—and loved her with all his heart.
“Prescription approved,” Ru whispered.
The storm that had brought them together was gone forever.
