Chapter 8 - The Receipts Come Under the Chandelier

I didn't rush. I didn't yell. I climbed the three carpeted steps to the stage with the effortless poise of a woman who had ruled New York boardrooms for four decades.

The Attorney General looked at me with deep concern. "Mrs. Whitmore, these are grave accusations—"

"Accusations, Robert," I said smoothly into the podium microphone, my voice steady and resonant, "are the desperate weapons of cornered criminals."

I turned my gaze toward Julian Croft and Vanessa Sterling.

"Julian," I began, my voice echoing with crisp authority, "you really should have checked who owned the cybersecurity firm managing your corporate servers before you uploaded those forged documents at 3:15 this morning from your penthouse IP address."

Croft’s smug smile instantly vanished. A flicker of panic crossed his dark eyes.

"What nonsense are you talking about?!" Croft hissed.

I raised my right hand and signaled the master technician booth at the back of the ballroom.

"Dim the main lights, please," I instructed.

The crystal chandeliers dimmed, and the massive eighty-foot high-definition digital screens behind the stage flickered to life.

Instead of the gala’s charity banner, the screens suddenly displayed a full, high-resolution video recording taken from inside Julian Croft’s private penthouse just twenty-four hours earlier.

The entire ballroom gasped.

On the screen, Croft and Vanessa were seen clearly sitting around the coffee table. The audio boomed through the ballroom’s state-of-the-art sound system:

(Croft: "I have forged internal financial audits from the Whitmore Foundation that make it look like Eleanor and Daniel have been laundering charitable donations into offshore tax havens...")

(Vanessa: "You’re going to frame them for charity fraud? I want to watch Eleanor Whitmore’s face when her precious empire burns to the ground!")

(Croft: "Before the night is over, Eleanor and Daniel will be led out in handcuffs. And while their stock plummets fifty percent by Monday morning, my consortium will execute a hostile takeover of Whitmore Industries.")

The evidence was undeniable. Irrefutable. Absolute.

The five hundred elite guests erupted in screams of fury and outrage.

"Fraud! Criminals! Throw them in prison!" voices shouted from the tables.

Vanessa stumbled backward against the banquet table, knocking over glasses of red wine that spilled across her bright red dress like blood. Her face was contorted in sheer, unadulterated horror.

"N-No! Turn it off! Turn it off!" Vanessa shrieked, covering her ears.

Julian Croft turned white as a sheet. He dropped the leather binder to the floor and bolted toward the rear exit doors of the ballroom.

"Stop him!" Daniel shouted from the floor.

Before Croft could take ten paces, the heavy double doors swung open. Six federal agents in dark FBI windbreakers, flanked by armed New York City police officers, stepped into the doorway, their badges gleaming.

"Julian Croft! Vanessa Sterling!" the lead FBI agent announced, drawing his handcuffs. "You are both under arrest for federal conspiracy, corporate espionage, wire fraud, and criminal extortion!"

Croft was slammed against the wall and handcuffed in front of fifty flashing press cameras.

Vanessa dropped to the floor, sobbing uncontrollably, kicking her legs as two female officers hoisted her up by her arms.

"Daniel! Please! It was Julian! He forced me to do it! Daniel, save me!" Vanessa wailed, her mascara running in black streaks down her face, looking completely unhinged.

Daniel walked up to the edge of the stage, looked down at her with calm, unwavering strength, and spoke into the microphone for the entire world to hear.

"You once told my mother that working people were dust under your feet, Vanessa," Daniel said with absolute clarity. "Now, you will see what happens when the law sweeps away the trash."

The entire ballroom erupted into thunderous, standing applause as Vanessa Sterling and Julian Croft were dragged out of the Plaza Hotel in heavy steel chains.
