Chapter 6 - The Bitter Revenge Plot of a Scorned Social Climber

While Daniel was finding solace in Clara’s humble bakery, Vanessa Sterling was spiraling into absolute madness in a dingy penthouse suite across the river.

Her luggage was piled in chaotic heaps on the floor. Her phone was ringing constantly with collection agencies demanding immediate repayment of hundreds of thousands of dollars in overdue loans.

"Shut up! Shut up!" Vanessa screamed, hurling a crystal vase against the wall, shattering it into a thousand glittering shards.

The door to the penthouse opened. Julian Croft walked in, dressed in a bespoke charcoal suit, an arrogant, calculating sneer plastered across his sharp face.

"Throwing tantrums won't fix your bank balance, Vanessa," Croft said coldly, tossing a copy of the morning newspaper onto the coffee table.

Vanessa glared at him, her eyes bloodshot and swollen from crying. "You promised me everything would go smoothly! You said the Whitmore old lady was a harmless recluse who stayed in her greenhouse all day! She humiliated me! She ruined my life!"

"You ruined your own life by being an arrogant amateur," Croft snapped back, his voice dripping with condescension. "Who in their right mind dumps dirty mop water on an elderly woman without checking who she is first? You're a fool, Vanessa. Now the entire country knows your face."

Vanessa lunged forward, grabbing Croft by the lapels of his jacket. "You owe me, Julian! I lost a fifty-billion-dollar empire because of your scheme! If you don't help me destroy the Whitmores, I will go to the federal prosecutors right now and tell them you paid me to steal their maritime blueprints!"

Croft’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. He calmly removed her hands from his coat and shoved her back onto the leather sofa.

"Threaten me again, Vanessa, and you won't live to spend a single penny in this city," Croft whispered in a chilling tone.

Vanessa swallowed hard, realizing she was dealing with a monster far more ruthless than herself.

"Then what do we do?" she whined, trembling. "Eleanor Whitmore has destroyed my reputation. Nobody will even look at me."

Croft walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the glowing Manhattan skyline. A dark, wicked smirk spread across his lips.

"Tomorrow night is the Annual Metropolitan Children’s Charity Gala at the Plaza Hotel," Croft said slowly. "Eleanor Whitmore is the honorary chairperson. Every billionaire, politician, foreign dignitary, and international news camera will be in that ballroom."

Vanessa sat up, her interest piqued. "And?"

"I have secured two unlisted VIP passes through a corrupt board member," Croft continued. "We are going to crash that gala. I have forged internal financial audits from the Whitmore Foundation that make it look like Eleanor and Daniel have been laundering charitable donations into offshore tax havens for the past decade."

Vanessa’s eyes lit up with malicious glee. "You’re going to frame them for charity fraud?"

"In front of three hundred elite guests and live national television," Croft laughed darkly. "We will hand the forged documents directly to the keynote speaker—the State Attorney General—right before Eleanor takes the stage. Before the night is over, Eleanor and Daniel will be led out of the Plaza in handcuffs. And while their stock plummets fifty percent by Monday morning, my consortium will execute a hostile takeover of Whitmore Industries."

Vanessa stood up, a wicked, venomous smile returning to her face. She wiped the mascara from her cheeks and smoothed down her dress.

May you like

"I want to be the one to hand the microphone to the Attorney General," Vanessa hissed. "I want to watch Eleanor Whitmore’s face when her precious empire burns to the ground."

"Consider it done," Croft smiled. "Get dressed, Vanessa. Tomorrow night, we bury the Whitmores once and for all."
