Chapter 11 - The Desperate Blackmail and the Final Threat

Six months later, while Vanessa Sterling was awaiting her final sentencing hearing under house arrest at her mother’s run-down apartment, desperation drove her to one final, reckless act of madness.
She knew she was going to prison. Her life was in ruins, her beauty was fading under the stress of impending incarceration, and her hatred for our family had consumed what little sanity she had left.
She discovered Daniel’s relationship with Clara through neighborhood social media posts.
On a rainy Tuesday morning, while Daniel was upstate inspecting a new harbor facility, the bell above the door of Clara’s Hearth jingled.
Clara was alone behind the counter, boxing up fresh pastries. She looked up, expecting a morning customer—and froze.
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
She wore a dark trench coat with the collar pulled up, her hair unwashed and tangled, an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet visible above her left boot. Her eyes were hollow, wild, and filled with poisonous malice.
"So... you're the little flour-rat Daniel replaced me with," Vanessa hissed, locking the front door behind her and flipping the sign to CLOSED.
Clara stood tall, maintaining her composure, though her heart pounded against her ribs. "You shouldn't be here, Vanessa. You're violating your bail conditions."
Vanessa pulled a heavy glass bottle from her coat pocket, filled with an amber liquid.
"This is industrial sulfuric acid," Vanessa whispered, a demonic grin spreading across her pale lips. "One splash across that pretty little face of yours, and we'll see if Daniel Whitmore still looks at you with those loving eyes."
Clara didn't scream. She kept her hands steady on the counter. "What do you want, Vanessa?"

"Fifty million dollars!" Vanessa screamed, her voice breaking with hysteria. "You will call Eleanor Whitmore right now on speakerphone! Tell her to wire fifty million dollars to a non-extradition account in the Bahamas within one hour, or I will melt your face off and burn this pathetic bakery to the ground!"
Suddenly, the kitchen door behind the counter swung open.
