Chapter 12 - A Mother’s Protection and the Ultimate Sting Operation

"I wouldn't advise doing that, Vanessa," a calm, commanding voice echoed through the bakery.
Vanessa gasped, stepping back in shock.
I stepped out from the kitchen, dressed in an immaculate cream cashmere coat, holding a steaming cup of tea in one hand. Standing silently behind me were two undercover female detectives from the New York Police Department, their firearms drawn and pointed directly at Vanessa’s chest.
"Drop the bottle! Now!" Detective Ramirez commanded with lethal authority.
Vanessa’s eyes bulged in pure disbelief. "Y-You?! How are you here?!"
"Did you honestly believe," I said, walking slowly around the counter and standing protectively in front of Clara, "that after everything you tried to do to my son, I wouldn't have twenty-four-hour private security watching Clara’s shop?"
Thomas Vance, our private investigator, had intercepted Vanessa’s dark-web communications two days earlier when she purchased the acid and arranged for a fraudulent private boat to smuggle her to the Caribbean. We had been waiting for her to make her move.
"You ruined my life!" Vanessa shrieked, raising the glass bottle threateningly. "I'll kill you both!"
BANG!
Detective Ramirez fired a non-lethal taser dart that struck Vanessa directly in the shoulder.
Fifty thousand volts surged through Vanessa’s body. She let out a strangled shriek, the glass bottle slipped from her paralyzed fingers—and was caught mid-air with lightning reflexes by Detective Torres before it could shatter on the floor.
Vanessa collapsed onto the wooden floorboards, convulsing and sobbing, her face pressed against the spilled flour near the door.
I walked over, looked down at her miserable, trembling form, and bent down slightly.
"You once threw dirty water on me and called me dust," I whispered into her ear with icy precision. "Now, you are looking at the dust from the floor of a woman ten thousand times better than you will ever be."
The front doors were kicked open, and four uniformed police officers swarmed in, securing Vanessa in heavy steel handcuffs and leg irons.
"Vanessa Sterling," the lead officer declared, dragging her up from the flour-covered floor, "you are under arrest for attempted aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, extortion, witness intimidation, and violation of federal bail. You're never seeing the light of day again."
Vanessa wailed like a wounded animal as she was thrown into the back of the armored police van, her final bid for revenge completely crushed into dust.
I turned back to Clara, who was trembling slightly from the adrenaline. I walked over, wrapped my arms tightly around her, and held her close.

"You're safe now, my sweet girl," I whispered, kissing Clara’s forehead. "You are part of this family, and nobody will ever harm you again."
Clara buried her face in my shoulder and wept tears of pure relief and gratitude.
