Chapter 9 - The Golden Sanctuary: Stepping Inside The Moretti Compound

Stepping inside the Moretti mansion was like crossing into an entirely different dimension.
The grand foyer featured polished white Italian marble floors that reflected the light of a massive crystal chandelier hanging from a twenty-foot ceiling. A grand curved staircase swept up to the second floor, lined with intricate gold-leaf railings. The air smelled of expensive cedarwood, polished mahogany, and fresh white lilies.
A warm, elderly woman with kind gray eyes and an immaculate navy dress walked forward, accompanied by two maids in crisp uniforms.
"Sarah, Emily, Noah... this is Maria," Lorenzo introduced. "She has managed my household for twenty years. Whatever you need—clothes, food, doctors, tutors—Maria will provide."
"Oh, look at these beautiful angels!" Maria gasped softly, her eyes glistening as she looked at Noah and me. She immediately brought over two plush, heated hand towels and cups of rich hot chocolate topped with homemade marshmallows. "Come in, come in out of the cold! Your rooms have been prepared on the east wing!"
I took a sip of the hot chocolate. It was so rich, creamy, and heavenly that I almost cried again.
Maria led us up the sweeping staircase to our new private quarters. My new bedroom was larger than our entire old rental house. It had a king-sized bed with pure silk sheets, a walk-in closet packed with brand-new designer winter coats, sweaters, and boots in my exact size, and a massive private bathroom with a heated marble tub. Connected to my room was a sunlit nursery for Noah, filled with wooden cribs, mountains of educational toys, and shelves stocked with baby supplies.
Mom’s suite was adjacent to ours—a lavish master bedroom with a roaring stone fireplace, a private balcony overlooking the lake, and a closet filled with elegant, comfortable clothing.
Mom sat down on the edge of her massive bed, running her fingers over the soft velvet duvet, and finally let out a breath she had been holding for three years.
"Emily," Mom whispered, pulling me into a tight hug as Noah crawled happily across the thick Persian rug. "I spent every single night praying to God for a miracle. I prayed that we would survive the winter. I never imagined He would send us an army."
That evening, dinner was served in the grand dining room.
A long mahogany table was laden with roasted prime rib, creamy garlic mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus, fresh lobster tails, and warm Italian pastries. Lorenzo sat at the head of the table, dressed casually in a dark cashmere sweater. For the first time, he didn't look like an untouchable mob boss; he looked like a protective older brother, watching us eat with genuine satisfaction.
"Tomorrow morning, a private tutor will arrive to assess Emily’s curriculum," Lorenzo stated, cutting into his steak. "Next month, she will enroll in Cranbrook Kingswood Academy—the best private school in the state. And Sarah, the trust fund from Victor Drake’s liquidated assets has been established. You have three million dollars under your name, completely clean, legally untraceable to my operations. You never have to clean another floor as long as you live."
Mom stopped her fork halfway to her mouth. Tears spilled over her cheeks once again. "Lorenzo... why are you doing all of this? The debt my husband had... it wasn't worth this much."
May you like
Lorenzo set his fork down, his hazel eyes locking onto my mother with profound intensity.
"David didn't just save my father, Sarah," Lorenzo confessed quietly. "Ten years ago, during the cartel ambush in downtown Chicago... I was in the car with my father. I was twenty-two years old, bleeding out in the backseat. David Carter drove that burning car through a barrage of machine-gun fire to get me to the hospital. He saved my life with his own hands. Every breath I have taken for the last ten years belongs to your husband. Keeping his children safe and wealthy isn't charity; it is my life's highest duty."
