Chapter 5 - The Shadows Watching Over Us: Guardian Angels In Tailored Black Suits

The next morning arrived not with the bitter, freezing chill that usually woke us up, but with the roar of heavy industrial diesel engines outside our window.

I sat up in bed, rubbing my eyes. For a few seconds, I thought everything that had happened yesterday was an elaborate, beautiful dream born out of hunger. But when I looked at the foot of my bed, a brand-new, ultra-thick down comforter was keeping me warm, and the rich smell of premium coffee and smoked bacon was wafting from the kitchen.

I jumped out of bed and ran to the front window.

The entire street was swarming with activity. Three large commercial construction vans were parked along the curb, alongside a matte-black sedan that remained idling quietly across the street. Men in rugged workwear were unloading double-paned storm windows, industrial insulation rolls, and a massive, brand-new heating furnace from the back of a flatbed truck.

Standing near the gate, directing the crew with clipboard in hand, was a tall man in a dark trench coat with a coiled earpiece. It was Marco, Lorenzo’s chief lieutenant.

Whenever a stranger or an unfamiliar car drove down our street, Marco’s sharp eyes tracked them with lethal intent, his hand casually resting near his left lapel until the vehicle passed. We weren't just getting our house fixed; we were under twenty-four-hour mafia guard.

"Emily, sweetie, breakfast is ready," Mom called from the kitchen.

When I walked in, I barely recognized our home. Mom had used a fraction of the grocery bounty to cook a feast: golden scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, fluffy pancakes with real maple syrup, and sliced strawberries. Noah was sitting in a brand-new high chair that had been delivered that morning, happily smearing mashed banana all over his chubby cheeks.

Mom looked different. The crushing, suffocating darkness that had haunted her eyes for years had begun to lift, replaced by a cautious, bewildered light.

"Mom," I asked, sitting down and taking a warm pancake, "is Mr. Moretti a bad man?"

Mom stopped stirring the coffee pot. She sat down across from me, her eyes thoughtful and complicated.

"In the eyes of the law and this city, Emily... Lorenzo Moretti is a very dangerous man," she answered honestly. "He commands thousands of men who operate in the underworld. People fear his shadow. But Lorenzo lives by an ancient, unbreakable code of honor. Your father saved his life when Lorenzo was just a young man starting out. Lorenzo never forgets a favor, and he never forgives an enemy. To the world, he is a monster. But to us... he is a guardian."

That afternoon, while the workers installed our new high-efficiency furnace, turning our cold house into a warm paradise of seventy-two degrees, my cracked phone buzzed.

I picked it up immediately.

“Did the furnace arrive on time?”

It was Lorenzo.

I quickly typed back: “Yes, Mr. Moretti! The house is so warm now, and Noah is laughing and eating well. Thank you so much.”

A moment later: “Good. Marco left a new laptop and school supplies in the living room for you. If you need anything else for your studies, tell him. Eat well today, Emily.”

I smiled at the screen. For the first time in three years, the constant knot of terror in my chest began to dissolve.

However, in the gritty underbelly of Detroit, sudden changes never went unnoticed. Our slum landlord, a ruthless local loan shark named Victor Drake, had just discovered that his most neglected property had been bought out from under him, and he was not the kind of man to let a cash cow go without a fight.
