Chapter 8 - When Lorenzo Strikes: Protecting The Family He Never Knew He Needed

Within two hours, our entire life in the slums was packed into six neat duffel bags.

As we stepped out onto the porch, a convoy of four armored SUVs waited with their engines purring. The entire street was completely locked down; two black sedans blocked either end of the intersection, ensuring no unauthorized vehicles could approach.

Neighbors peeked through their curtains in stunned silence. For years, the Carters had been the invisible, struggling family that everyone pitied but no one helped. Now, the undisputed king of the city was personally escorting us into a luxury armored vehicle like royalty.

Lorenzo held the door open for Mom, who carried Noah wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket. Then, he turned to me, offering his hand to help me into the plush leather interior of the central Escalade.

"Are you warm enough, Emily?" he asked.

"Yes, Mr. Moretti," I said, sinking into the heated leather seats. "Where are we going?"

"To a place where no one will ever knock on your door with a crowbar again," Lorenzo answered, climbing in beside me and closing the heavy bulletproof door with a satisfying, airtight thud.

The convoy surged forward smoothly, gliding through the grimy streets of outer Detroit before heading east toward Grosse Pointe—the wealthiest, most exclusive enclave in Michigan.

As we drove, Lorenzo’s encrypted phone rang constantly. He answered calls in short, razor-sharp commands, speaking in rapid Italian and English, coordinating financial transfers and restructuring corporate holdings. Yet, every time Noah let out a small coo or reached his little hand toward Lorenzo’s shiny watch, the terrifying mob boss immediately paused his multi-million-dollar phone calls, allowing Noah to grasp his pinky finger with his tiny fist.

Watching this ruthless man soften every time he looked at my baby brother made the lingering fear in my heart completely vanish.

Thirty minutes later, the convoy turned off the coastal highway and approached massive, fifteen-foot wrought-iron gates flanked by high stone walls topped with state-of-the-art security cameras. Two armed guards at the gatehouse saluted as the iron gates swung open smoothly.

The vehicles rolled up a winding, tree-lined private driveway covered in pristine snow, finally coming to a stop in front of a breathtaking, sprawling Italian-style stone mansion overlooking the frozen expanse of Lake St. Clair.

It looked like a castle from a fairy tale.

"We... we can't live here, Lorenzo," Mom whispered, her jaw dropping as she stared at the towering marble pillars, the manicured gardens, and the glowing chandeliers visible through the floor-to-ceiling windows. "This is too much. It's insane."

"This is David’s legacy," Lorenzo replied firmly, stepping out into the brisk air. "Welcome home."
